It seems better than ours considering all the damage we're causing ourselves.

But we'll see.

This isolation is just to prevent as much spread as possible so that more testing can be done.

Once the mass testing comes around, once people are checked out and ok, they can go back to normal.
I might understand 2 weeks with the potential for 2 more weeks, but to go straight to a whole month is way past kneejerk.

That, or the grandparents will be watching the kids all day, which means we are exposing those most vulnerable to this virus to those who carry it with no symptoms.

While true, it will still significantly reduce spread. By closing schools, we just reduced potential viral transmission events by billions in a community.

Cancel school forever then?

This virus doesn't seem to impact kids much, if at all. It is bad for old people, and we are creating a scenario where a bunch of kids probably already have the virus, but are asymptomatic, and will have to spend more time than usual around old people (their grandparents, most likely).

It amazes me how we all of a sudden have OT experts on how to handle something that hasn't been a thing in any of our lifetimes.

Here in Georgia it’s 2 weeks.

I'm in Georgia and our school district went with the ominous "closed indefinitely." So I don't know if my two elementary schools kids will be out two weeks or until high school.

I understand, but my point is that is just one part of the equation.

Surely this decision will slow the spread, but to what degree? We have no idea. What will be the reduction in the healthcare workforce due to this decision? We can probably calculate that one, but who knows the number? What will be the economic impact? Hard to say. Many people can't afford to miss one paycheck, much less a month's worth. Larger businesses might offer some financial support, but small businesses can't afford that.

And there are many more questions, none of which we can answer at this point. So why jump straight to canceling school for a month?

Nobody here is claiming to be an expert in the spread of disease. Rather, I'm just sharing my opinion that in almost all cases, regarding any topic, the best decision is the rational, logical, non-kneejerk one.

In terms of protecting the public and, more importantly, protecting the healthcare system, the most important part of the equation.

Yep. Have to be seen as doing something.

Find a babysitter. 20+ kids packed in a small classroom breathing and coughing all over each other for 8 hours a day. Yeah that will spread like wildfire.

we ( wife and i) co-own a daycare, plus we both work other jobs. We are near capacity with around 100 kids. Our director said people have been ringing the phone all day scrambling in anticipation of the school shut down. We told her not to accept anymore new kids. We hired two ladies last week just to clean. I have the same concerns you do about one of our kids getting sick. We’ve asked parents if your kid shows any symptoms to please stay home and if they bring their kid in sick we will not accept him/her in the building
Shouldn't daycare's close in tandem with the school closings?

I didn't hear anyone telling politicians to close schools, cancel sports, close public gatherings or anything else.
It's politicians taking advantage of a situation & a trial run to control every corner of society.
Nothing more, nothing less.

If you're not shutting down stores and public places, what's the point of limiting the size of gatherings to an arbitrary number of people?

That’s an entirely different discussion, and I agree with that. Grocery stores and pharmacies need to remain open. The problem is people think it’s the end of the world, and their solution is to stand in a line with a couple hundred people to get TP.

Jesus Christ.............. do you understand the gravity of what is going on right now?

It's crazy to see so many people think this is all a big ploy by the government. You loony fricks are WAY more dangerous than the virus.

Except for the infectious disease and pandemic experts.

Do you people really think organizations like the NBA are voluntary losing billions of dollars when it isn’t necessary?

It’s been well researched. The vast majority of people cannot conceptualize scale.

I agree that this should be our primary concern, but my question remains. How can we be sure that closing schools is the best way to achieve this, given that children are largely unaffected by the virus? Who has done the math regarding whether the loss in healthcare workforce due to childcare needs is more than offset by the reduced number of cases that required care?
