Opinions on hygiene/smegma aside, uncircumcised males have a higher incidence of cancer.

Two of my cousins had it done as teenagers. They've had it done to each of their boys as infants.

4) reduced risk of STD transmission.

Does circumcision influence sexually transmitted diseases?

quote:

HIV

There have been 36 case-controlled studies published in peer-reviewed journals addressing the relationship between the foreskin and HIV infection; the results have been inconsistent. Several studies performed in STD clinics have found the foreskin to be a risk factor [17,18,21,25,29,30,68-72], while several random population surveys, which do not have the population bias of an STD clinic study, have found circumcised men to be at higher risk [32,73-75]. Several studies have failed to detect a statistically significant difference between men with and without a foreskin [31,76-87]. In several studies, when the populations are controlled for GUD, number of sexual partners and other factors, the results differ significantly from the raw data. The USA has the highest incidence of HIV infection, as well as the highest incidence of male circumcision amongst developed nations. This speaks against the protective effect of circumcision [89]. The inconsistency of the results and the number of confounding factors make it impossible to link the foreskin to HIV infection [36,90].

Recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics to lessen risk of cancer

American Cancer Society says otherwise

quote:

Can penile cancer be prevented?

The large variations in penile cancer rates throughout the world strongly suggest that many penile cancers can be prevented. The best way to reduce the risk of penile cancer is to avoid known risk factors whenever possible (see “What are the risk factors for penile cancer?”). But some men with penile cancer have no known avoidable risk factors, so it’s not possible to prevent this disease completely.

In the past, circumcision (removing the foreskin on the penis) has been suggested as a way to lower penile cancer risk. This was based on studies that reported much lower penile cancer rates among circumcised men than among uncircumcised men. But in some studies, the protective effect of circumcision was no longer seen after factors like smegma and phimosis were taken into account.

In the United States, the risk of penile cancer is low even among uncircumcised men. Men who wish to lower their risk of penile cancer can do so in other ways, such as by avoiding human papilloma virus (HPV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and by not smoking. Men who aren’t circumcised can also lower their risk of penile cancer by practicing good genital hygiene. Although infant circumcision can lower the risk of penile cancer, based on the low risk of this cancer in the US, it would take over 900 circumcisions to prevent one case of penile cancer in this country.

I'm aware of the lack of iron-clad proof. The evidence isn't fantastic, but it makes conceptual sense. The statement "USA has the highest rates of circumsision and the highest rates of HIV" also is not perfectly sound.

There are risks of transmission to an unprotected penis, regardless of whether it's circumcised or not. Mucosal surfaces make HIV transmission more likely. The fore skin creates a near-mucosal like surface with a different cellular makeup than that on the uncircumcised male, thus the concept makes sense.

How clinically relevant this is remains to be seen because of the high likelihood of repeat exposures in the group who is exposed even once with a lack of being able to design a study capable of proving this. You would basically need to take a group of uncircumcised males and circumcised males, expose them, intentionally, to HIV (or whichever STD we are talking about), re-test, re-expose until everyone becomes positive and see if the number of exposures prior to becoming positive is different among the groups.

I wrote and deleted "theoretical risk reduction for STDs including HIV" but figured it looked better the other way and that I would explain that the risk reduction is theoretical with poor/inconclusive clinical data to represent the claim.

Absolutely not. There is no good reason to cut off a portion of my son's dick based on a religious covenant that I'm not even a part of.
