Since IQ is essentially normally distributed the average and median are the same. So, yes, half of the population is below the average.

Not quite.

There is a vast amount of people who have perfectly average IQs, therefore less than half the population is below the average/median just as less than half the population is above the average/median.

Mean is the numerical average SumX/N
Median is the number that when all values are put in rank order falls in the middle of the numbers:

5,25,78,1,6: Mean is 23 (115/5)
1,5,6,25,78: Median is 6

Bonus bonus bonus: the point of this thread was to show people that half the population would have an IQ below the median, not below the average. Median is evenly distributed by definition, average is not.

You're correct, but they are both measures of central tendency, which attempts to determine a value that is representative of a data set. Basically they are both attempting to determine the 'average' of a data set (assuming that you mean "mean" when you say average).

ETA: by the 'average' of a data set, I mean the central value

The average TD poster sucks, as does the median TD poster.

Oh boy.

how did you get those numbers from 11116

1,1,1,1,6

It's a number series, not one number.

the average is 5553

Also, if there is only one number, then there is no average(or it would just be the number). You don't arbitrarily divide by some number. I assume you were trying to divide by 2. That would be 5558.

True. There are studies suggesting that the IQ distribution is slightly right-skewed which would imply that >50% of the population is lower than the mean.

For my statistics I prefer to drop the lowest and highest 2% of the data set and take the average from the remaining 96% of the data.

This weeds out anomalies that throw off the result.

Unless I don’t like the result, then I’ll chop off more or less until I manipulate it to show what I want.

So on average, mean people have higher IQs?

This won't work if your data are continuous
