Ever been on post and seen people scurry to avoid being caught in the open when Retreat is played?

You stand to show respect.

And you don’t need to stand if you aren’t at the event and are just watching it on TV.

If you’re at a wedding, you stand when the bride walks down the aisle. But you don’t need to stand in your living room if you’re watching a wedding on TV.

We have social customs and norms that a respectable society practices. And no, they don’t all make perfect sense. But so what. If you refuse to participate, it doesn’t make you “woke”, it just makes you an a-hole.

Not at all. Especially if you country strives to be a righteous country. You're not worshipping your country but you are declaring you'd be willing to lay down your life to sustain it's righteous principles. The United States, while not perfect, was founded on principles of freedom and liberty. An excercise to sustain God given rights.

Pledging allegiance to the US, in the prizn of how I laid it out, and following God's edicts, in this case in particular, are not mutually exclusive. So I have no problem whatsoever with the pledge.

I saw a guy at a HS football game trying to get people to stand for God Bless the USA once. Compliance was sparse.

Yeah that never makes sense to me when people stand for God Bless the USA. It’s a song, not our national anthem.

Agreed. I mean, it’s not like Donny cares about respecting the flag and anthem. Nor can he even be bothered to stand for the whole thing! Why should we care?

But only for white males.

Especially if you've benefitted so much from being a part of American society.

Easy there, tiger. You are upsetting yourself for little to no reason.

I have always stood in order to show respect for what the flag stands for, not for the flag itself. On one side people get hung up on honoring an object and don't even consider the real issue at hand. That being said, if it ever becomes against the law to sit, kneel, or even burn the flag, it stands for absolutely nothing anymore, and that's what the other side doesn't see.

Somebody should tell the president that.

It’s very simple for me—I 100% respect freedom of speech. If someone wants to stand up in public and shout that they hate white people or black people or they think women shouldn’t be allowed to vote —I support their right to speak and I support my own right to call them a$$holes. Same as I feel about those who don’t stand and respect the flag/national anthem. They have to right to make their point and I have a right to make my point—that they’re disrespectful, ungrateful a$$holes.

I was gonna sit to give you the 200th downvote but standing just felt much more satisfying.

Almost as silly as groups of people singing in unison at a Church.

Not mad at all buddy. If you want to look like a douche to everyone around, go for it. I’m sure the attention is what you are seeking anyway.

If you're there live and the Public Announcer asks "all rise for our national anthem"

It's something you do together to show respect, for country, flag, the singer, those who sacrificed for our freedom and one another in appreciation..

That said, my daughter sent me a photo from her classroom today of students on their phones sitting down during the pledge of allegiance...

The president was standing and was enthusiastic in his patriotism. I give that a thumbs up.
