originally designed as part of harriet tubman's underground railroad, baton rouge's recently constructed high speed "southern loop" monorail is by far the city's best kept secret

Copper mill golf course in Zachary is loaded with fish. Aggressive bass. Only one pond open to public , but I catch them late in the afternoon when it's unlikely to catch a course employee riding around. The ponds on #9 and #18 are the best on the course for catching a 5 + pound bass

If I recall correctly there are lots of WWII items, tanks, bazookas, jeeps, etc. buried in the Indian Mounds at LSU.

Cut-throughs:
Valley Street/Nairn Drive to get over I-10
Bawell Drive/Banker's Ave/Energy Drive to get from Acadian to Corporate
Cedarcrest to get under I-12
Innerline to get from Jefferson/Druscilla to Airline
neighborhoods:
Old Goodwood between Jefferson and Independence Park
S. Eugene and side streets south of Reymond Ave
Restaurants:
Capital City Crawfish: Leidenheimer bread on their po'boys and they make their own boudin now in house. It's a real honey hole.
Delpit's Chicken Shack: Best fried chicken in town and cheap to boot. Get the Big Shaq chicken or fish sandwich and eat like a king for less than $3
Happy Hour at Flemings: from 5-7 $6 burger is one of the best I've ever had.
Ronnie's Boudin: most of the talk in BR goes to Jerry Lee's (best hogshead cheese) or Bergeron's (best meat market and great smoked boudin), but Ronnie's may have the best regular boudin, boudin balls, and cracklin's in the city. They also have daily plate lunches.
Bergeron's (Port Allen): great at more than just boudin (honestly, their non-smoked boudin is pretty mediocre). They have stellar plate lunches, but their meat market is where it's at. Grab some bacon and green onion stuffed chicken patties, crawfish pistolettes, and pork tasso and succomb to that sweet sweet cardiac arrest.
River Queen Drive Inn (Port Allen): The Ida Burger for $3.80 may be the largest and tastiest burger for the money anywhere in America.
La Morenita: Walk like an illegal down to this Mexican meat market on Florida, home to a lunch counter serving some of the most authentic Mexican food in town. Get the chili rellinos
South of Philly: if you like cheese steaks, this is your spot
Omi: they serve some of the most unique, tasty, and authentic chinese in town.
Kaminari (LSU location only): are you broke, love sushi, and not afraid to be a little adventurous? Then the $10 lunch all-you-can-eat sushi buffet at kaminari is your place! Come with an empty stomach, hope that you leave with an iron one.
Jazz Daddy's Po'boys: cheap, large portions, and delicious. What more do you want from a local po'boy place?
Krispy Kreme on Plank Road (mmm...hot donuts)
Port Allen Bakery: donuts and kolache's seemingly open early enough that stoners can drop in for a snack before bed.
Kolache cafe: convenient tailgate stop for day games. A nice box of kolaches should help to keep one from getting too drunk too fast, to keep that good buzz all day.

Seriously, there's a really cool tiny old cemetery just off Highland near the South gates of LSU. Some Civil War era and older graves.
I think it's actually off Oxford Ave near E. Parker. We used to walk behind a house from the little park on Amherst to get there.

Dixie Maid on McClelland Drive off of Evangeline. i will put it up against ANY cheeseburger in Baton Rouge.
But its cash only, in the ghetto and only a walk up window to order. no place to go inside and eat. if you are brave enough, then you can sit down outside on one of the picnic benches. you should have some interesting folk join you.

Yeah.
Regular philly is a tossup, but when it comes to specialty phillys I have to go with Philly Me Up

Yeah, I don't use many cut-throughs on a regular basis, but Government to/from Garden District to get to overpass area is definitely one I use constantly.
Also use some back streets in Jones' neighborhood to avoid the Highland/Lee intersection.
And YES. Capital City Crawfish, Delpit's Chicken Shack, Flemings HH, OMI.
I've also been meaning to try out the food at Uncle Earl's because they are practically giving the stuff away during specials.
La Morenita also for groceries, not just the lunch counter. The produce is mind-blowing cheap.
Also .. produce market for anyone who still buys veggies/fruits in grocery stores. It is not just marginally cheaper.. it is a lot cheaper. When you have a buggy full of veggies and the total is $20, you can thank me
Happy hour at Olive or Twist.. $2 domestic beers, $5 house wines, $5 classic cocktails (Sazarac, Moscow Mule, etc.) and $6 small plates; $5 calls on Absolut vodka, Beefeater gin, Don Q rum, Crown Royal, Jack Daniel's and Maker's Mark. They also now do $5 burgers on brioche buns served WITH fries on Tuesdays, which I will be checking out tomorrow.
Happy hour at Galatoire's. $5 wines, cocktails, small plates, and $3 beer.
They are also doing a menu right now on weeknights that is $30 for three small plates and three wines.
Lunch special at Nino's, which is already a hidden gem that EVERYONE needs to go try. Best pasta in the city. Lunch special is $12 for two courses.
Lunch special at Juban's. $20 three course meal.
A lot of people overlook nicer places like Flemings, Jubans, Ninos, Galatoires, etc. because they think $$$$$. But those places rock some pretty awesome lunch and happy hour specials where you can try them out without breaking the bank.
