... for the average male?

I’m not talking about MMA fighters or boxers or anyone in that world. I’m also not talking about the optimum age for someone who stays in top shape from their teens to middle age.

This person might have played football and wrestled in high school... or he might have been on the chess team. He might have lived in the gym in college... or might have stayed wasted at the frat house. He might work some hard blue collar job... or might sit in a cubicle eight hours a day. He might be single or carrying the weight of a family on his back.

Or anything in between.

Average men are probably their fastest, quickest, and strongest (at least in the weight room) in their teens and early twenties, but older adult males tend to be bigger and often have a toughness edge that comes from years of having to fend for themselves and others. And then, of course, at some point there’s a substantial mental and physical decline with age.

And we’re talking about a fight to the death in a confined space like an MMA ring.

At what age do you think the average male is most formidable from 18+ years of age?

Mids 20 probably. Old enough to develop, young enough to be dumb enough to care about this kind of stuff and likely not have too much to lose.

I heard 28 a long time ago. Not sure if true.

Yeah this.

I still felt very youthful at 25 but also was much tougher and stronger than my college self. On my own personal timeline, 25 year old CatfishJohn beats 20, 30, 35, and 40 year old CatfishJohn.

27-28 is when the hangovers started getting so bad I realized I had started my physical decline in life.

Mid-late 20s for the average city dwelling male.

Early 50s for a man that does moderate manual labor daily and takes decent care of himself. Old man strength on a man that keeps up 50+ acres is a real thing.

I like this train of thought, but I'd say mid/early 40s.

I worked some hard labor jobs in college and high school with some roughnecks and Mexicans. And those dudes with 20+ years of labor under their belts were made of steel.

They didn't look like pro athletes or body builders but I swear they could get caught in a cage with a grizzly bear and make it out alive wearing a new fur coat.

Wrong.

Old man strength is real.

Old man recovery is fricking nonexistent though.

But in a one-time fight I'm going the older guy, all other things being equal.

Whatever Canelo's age is right now, probably like 28 ish.

Sweet spot where everything, both mental and physical, has come together for him and he's almost unbeatable atm.

I would say early to mid thirties from my experience. I don’t do MMA, but do train grappling. After 40 you start to see a drop off. Things start to hurt longer and aches seem to pop up regularly.

The 30-35 guys are still young enough to move very well but old enough to have that sense of calmness that comes with age.

Well said. Fighting is as much mental as physical. For most people, the want is no longer there during the physical prime (upper 20s). I haven’t been in a fight since 19, so in my prime, not only did I not want to fight, but I was 10 years out of practice.

I assume it differs for an elite athlete, but as an average dude I'd think mid to late 20s. You're close to a peak athletically, you've got a bit more wisdom than you once did, your recovery time hasn't gone to shite which means you're not anticipating injury as much as you are by the time you're in your mid 30s, etc.

All that said, I think it's probably older once you get out of the context of a physical brawl. A mixed fight that involves hand to hand and weapons, evasion, etc. would probably favor an older guy. Smarter not harder, etc.

25-28 is probably about right, but here’s where it gets dicey.

40 year old me is gonna goad the younger, dumber 25 year old me into a fight. Gonna get me riled up. Set a time and a place. Hype it.

Then on the appointed day, 25 year old me is gonna show up ready to beat my 40 yo arse.

Only my 40 year old arse isn’t be there. My 40 yo arse is gonna be sipping drinks on a beach with 25 YO me’s wife.

And when 25 YO me realizes he’s been had, he’s gonna furiously go back to his vehicle, determined to track me down.

And then, when he turns the key,..
