re: What is the best dog breed for young children?

There are tons of breeds that are great with kids but especially younger kids always gravitate to our Basset. Our Ridgebacks are perfectly docile and loving to kids but their size seems to intimidate them. The affection seems to go with the girls through adulthood but boys seem to want to play more with the Ridgebacks once they hit 11-12.

Pit Bulls actually aren’t a bad dog, despite what this board says. As long as you train them and don’t treat them like shite
That being said… don’t get a Pit Bull

Boston Terrier. Do not get a goldendoodle

Golden Retriever.
ETA: for first year they need some supervision or training because they love children too much and may jump on them. With training or maturity they are great.

Havanese. They are very affectionate and like to be around people.

If you want something unusual, a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Bouvier de Flanders are both large dogs that are good watch dogs and very good with kids. The Bouvier in particular is protective and will not back down in defense of his family BUT is also very safe with kids.

Wonderful dogs. Had a friend who has a DS daughter. She and her husband got an Aussie to keep their daughter safe in the backyard.
Aussies are herders. They are great with kids, but are known to nip to keep those they "herd" in line.

Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff)
We will never own another breed

My Aussie hates kids.
Aussies are great dogs but they are a poor choice around young kids. Some are fine with them and some are definitely not. There are too many breeds with steller records with kids to test an Aussie out unless you are dead set on the breed.

My brothers and I grew up with airdale terriers and they are great family dogs. Labs are always good.
I think almost all dogs who are "good" dogs will be good around kids. My dog loves to lay around my nephew's crib and just be there. He starts crying and my dog barks to make sure someone takes care of him. They have really incredible instincts

Looking to get the kids a dog and was wondering what everyone thought was the best breed to be around young children. Thanks.
I think small to medium short haired breeds are the easiest to live with and in my experience have a good temperament.
Dachshund
Beagle
Terrier
Take a look at the local shelter also. We got a pair about 2 years ago. A terrier mix and a crossbreed dachshund/pit mix.

I was nervous about my newborn, because I’d had a springer for 3 yrs. the dog couldn’t be better, so sweet w my son. You can read bad stuff on spaniels but mine is so mild. Should be golden as long as I stop reading dog cancer threads on the OT

Boykin Spaniel. Had mine for 17 years and never even heard it growl. Most gentle breed ever developed
My boy rails all over our Boykin and the dog loves it. They were playing ball this afternoon and he bopped him in the head with a sofa pillow and the dog was like "What kind of new game is this??" LOL

Golden Retriever
We had a female Doberman that was protective of my brothers and I, and our cat. We had her for 13 years before she had to be put down with painful cysts on her breasts. She was a great dog around the other kids that came over. She didn't like grown men in service trucks, or the garbage or mail men, but she never bit anyone.
