If you're referring to payscale, do you think an unsoliciting, self-reporting website is really a good indicator? What do you think is the statistical significance of the data? Do you think highly compensated professionals are running to payscale/salary/glassdoor/indeed to self report their salary? So might there be sampling bias?
Is that what you mean by the statement that you "see salaries everyday"?

Chemical engineering and petroleum engineering are two of the higher paid sub-specialties.
Mechanical, electrical, civil, environmental are roughly 75K-115K

FWIW OP, I think I'm about to go back and get a bachelor's in Radiological Science. Done a lot of research and it seems as practical and interesting as any

The first point that I made is that salary is industry and geographically influenced. If you're not quoting salaries from these company's "books" in the GOM region, then everything that is being argued is apples to oranges. I'm speaking specifically from the chemical processing industry with some experience in E&P. Summer engineer intern hourly basis is greater than 75K per annum. You mentioned Shell. Fresh out of undergrad, new-hire engineers at Shell Geismar start at >100K (some, maybe not all). I don't need you to acquiesce. I just want you to know that, in this region, your assessment of salary potential is way off.
