I am just guessing here but....
Let's assume this is one of those countryside hospitals that does have regular empty beds.
Let's assume the doctor is an old friend and could find some way to keep him in (like constant chest pains, etc).
And now assume that since they are just housing and feeding him and giving him some minor medicines and sleeping pills it really isnt causting them much, no heroic measures are being done.
And finally assume that Grandpa pays all of this out of pocket. Maybe 1000 dollars a day for 30 grand total.
I don't find his story hard to believe and it's really not all that far fetched.
Let's assume this is one of those countryside hospitals that does have regular empty beds.
Let's assume the doctor is an old friend and could find some way to keep him in (like constant chest pains, etc).
And now assume that since they are just housing and feeding him and giving him some minor medicines and sleeping pills it really isnt causting them much, no heroic measures are being done.
And finally assume that Grandpa pays all of this out of pocket. Maybe 1000 dollars a day for 30 grand total.

If an old friend, then why did OP say the grandfather went in feigning heart pain? Why wouldn't he just tell the old friend doc what's up, and save them the cost of running tests?

For insurance purposes, I can't fathom any hospital doing this. I know their insurance carriers would not insure them for putting people up like a hotel when they're not sick, because of liability exposure.

This one comes down to the smell test. Using common sense, why would a 102 year old man want and choose to spend his last dying days in a hospital, when he is perfectly healthy? Why would he need to be in a hospital to will himself to death, as opposed to home with loved ones? Why would this wonderful, generous grandpa choose to piss away $30K that he could give to his family?
Every old person I know would do the exact opposite. The last place they want to be when dying is in a hospital. And this guy is perfectly healthy, and wants to spend $30k of his personal money to go to a hospital to die?
It just all sounds like a made up story that is made up to fit the thread subject. Mizzou seems like an alright dude to me. But he does start new threads every day. I think maybe he's starting to run out of ideas on new material and might be taking some liberties to generate interest in his threads?

which is exactly what happened. Fwiw, Grandpa had a ton of money. Payment wasn't an issue and that hospital knew that.
I'm not sure why this is so unbelievable for some. I'm guessing people just like to troll and flame me because of my reputation here.

Because he lived by himself in a very small rural community and the hospital is in the same town where my aunt lives. It made it more convenient for her and him to be together in his last days.
