Depends on who you are.

I'm sure a lot of people on this board think Baton Rouge is a big city

Big to huge cities are Atlanta, Houston, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Las Angeles, Chicago, etc. Maybe over 2 million metro area for me to consider it being big. A few hundred thousand for it to be considered a city of any significant size.

This. Even though Baton Rouge has close to 500,000, it feels more like a big town than anything. Not that that's a bad thing

50k< 100k a small city
100k< 250k a decent city
250k <1 MM a big city
1MM< too effing big for my tastes.

Any MSA that has more than one pro sports team that plays in one of the four major sporting leagues; NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL.

I'd say Metro area over 2 million. Many big cities have populations less than a million, Seattle Boston and San Fran included.

There are always outliers.

San Antonio is one giant suburb with a massive transient military population.

San Diego has two teams

Portland is full of street people

- Metro population of over 3,000,000 is huge. These usually have professional sports teams, top tier shopping, global businesses and industrial hubs, numerous institutions of higher education, major cultural attractions, and major international airports.

Houston, NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Philly fit into this category.

-Metro population of over 800,000 is "big" but not huge. These cities are regional shopping and logistics hubs, most amenities of a bit city, some cultural hubs, one or more large universities, an industrial base with national and possibly international scope, and some even have professional sports teams.

New Orleans, Memphis, Baton Rouge, Austin, Birmingham, Nashville, OKC, Portland fit in here.

-Metro of over 350,000 is medium sized. Almost never have professional sports teams, usually a local shopping and medical hub. May have a regional college or university.

Laffy, Jackson, Shreveport, Little Rock, Tulsa fit into this category

- Anything smaller than 350,000 metro is a small city. Some manufacturing, shopping, and more than one regional medical center.

Houma, McComb, Funroe, etc. fit into this category.

Smaller than 50,000 is a town. These usually have a traditional small town feel, rural/agricultural parish or county seat, origins are not that of a bedroom community but may be considered a distant suburb one day, still "Main Street" centric. More John Deere dealerships than foreign car dealerships.

Ville Platte, New Roads, St Francisville, Marksville, Clinton, Bunkie, Eunice, etc.
