Me and the gf are going lobster diving at the beginning of august. Have never done anything like this but I'm just wondering what is a good tip to give the captain of the charter

$100 for the Capt and $25 for the deckhand

Depends if you catch or not, but I'd say $40-50'ish minimum for the effort or $100 for great trip.
How much is the trip itself?

Let him marry the two of you. Captains love that.

Is it his boat?
Yes %10
No %20
If he has a deckhand just tip the deckhand.

The trip itself is $500 and Idk if it's his boat because we booked it through a chartering company

Outdoor Board ----> Search Function.
It depends on hrs spent on boat, fuel burn, and how much of their equipment is involved.

20% Rule plus another $100 if you catch a monster fish.

Depends on the cost of the charter and what the captain has to do for you. Going to tip differently on a 1000 dollar trip compared to a 500 dollar trip. If he's just putting you on speckled trout, it's one thing. If he's busting arse on a Tuna trip, it's another.
I'm going on a flats trip next week. Trip was 450. I'm planning to tip 150 since the guide will be push poling the entire time.
Also, Outdoor Board is probably a better place for this.

Ten % of charter cost at least. Plus deckhand.

25% if you do really well.
20% if you do good.
10% if its not that great.
0 if he bangs your girlfriend.

And I've never been lobster diving, so just giving comparable experiences. Not sure what a charter captain does on those trips. If he is busting his arse for you, I'd tip up to 50% in certain situations. If he's just driving a boat and pushing you off the side, He's getting like 15%.

i imagine thats it.
maybe he cooks them on a little grill out there an they eat lobster rolls. that would let you keep more than the limit
i think its 9

Spinoff: Do you tip them separately, or just add the tip in when handing the money over to the Capt. and let them split it?
I'm a big tipper, but I never understood the need for tipping a Capt. Who runs his own boat. Charter trips are not cheap, so you are paying them good money with the expectation of them putting you on the fish. Pretty much every other industry that customarily involves tipping is a situation where you have a very low paid worker and it's common knowledge that their tips ARE their income. Not remotely close to a Capt. running his own boat. Deckhand is a different story - they generally rely on tips for income.

I feel the same. If he's running his own boat then why should I tip? Just increase your price if you want a tip. Shirt thing is the way the deck gets paid. They work strickly for tips, or so they say. That can be a blessing or a curse.
