Common mistake is to assume the Roman Empire ended in 476. It continued for nearly 1000 years after that.

Constantine moved his capital and the western part of the empire was increasingly neglected by his successors.

I don't count the Byzantine Empire as the Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire had its own rich and colorful history but it's not the same at all to me.
