Do you think Justinian would have succeeded in reuniting the Roman Empire in a lasting fashion?

Conquests aside, the economic engine he needed to merely sustain what he already held was catastrophically damaged.

I would argue that Justinian's reign was one of those golden opportunities in history where everything had come together and was possible, but it was cut short by the Plague. He had his own administrative genius, the military genius of Belisarius, and the wealth/manpower to accomplish whatever he set his mind to.

i think the biggest set back to civilization was the burning of the library in Alexandria. i've read that it set us back 500-1000 years

As with anything, building it is hard, but sustaining it is even harder. Chances are it would have spiraled out of control, he would have been assassinated, or civil war would have occurred.

And none other than Julius Caesar is suspected to be the major culprit behind it.

Never liked his music. That whole farce at the superbowl with Janet Jackson was the nail in the coffin for me.

One big change I can imagine is the containment of Islam to the Arabian peninsula. Both the Byzantines and the Sassanians were weakened by the plague and that might have contributed to their defeat by the Arabs.

Assuming the stories of Justinian casting Belisarius out are true...Justinian had a pride issue as well

Certainly possible. Justinian was never known for his public approval ratings.

On the other hand, in an un-plagued world there is no doubt that the Byzantines are exponentially more wealthy as a whole, and in general a wealthier society may grumble about politics but are less prone to rebellion.

Considering that Alexandria was no longer the absolute center of learning and knowledge, with foreign scholars having been expelled this is a pretty absurd statement.

They don’t even know what event actually destroyed it for sure. Not exactly the blow that stifled humanity if that date couldn’t be marked.
