Why is it so important that kids play the way their parents did?
So long as they are growing and not misbehaving (beyond normal),then what's the issue with a video game or time on an iPad?

Vibrators allowed only when I am out of the house.

Send them outside to mess around. Pretty soon someone is running from the other. Exercise, using up stored energy, sweat, staying trim....... when 11, I let my youngest son pick out a framing hammer and a skill saw that he could call his tools. He helped me and learned how to rebuild the back deck on the house. He measured, cut, spaced, nailed and could not wait to start each day. Keep, finding something for them to do with you or with each other.

Rule is only PBS or Daystar. Some veggie tales or other similar programming on weekends for good behavior after chores. Kids 4, 6, 13, and 17 for reference.

4 & 7 year olds and neither use iPads or other “technology.” They usually watch 30-60 minutes of TV before bed and that’s about it. They aren’t lacking for modern technology or other cognitive development. However, we don’t restrict them or hardline them. The key for us is that we also limit our cell phone and technology use around them. We kind of have a “life is short, let’s spend time with our kids” approach.
Kids usually mimic what they see: for instance everyone usually complains about the kids at restaurants buried into an iPad, but no one calls out the parents who are sitting at the same table with dad on Twitter/FB and mom on Insta. If you want to improve your child’s dependence on technology, start with a hard look at your own habits.
-I have an entirely different rant about how technology is extremely bad for a developing mind, but that is a can of worms that can wait for another day.

understand why you don't want the children glued to their electronic devices, but given our substantial technological advances in the past 20 years, don't you think you're doing them a disservice by not allowing them to keep active and current with modern technology?
The prevailing studies on this stuff show that the increased use of screen devices actually negatively affects learning capability down the road because of problems with attention spans and retention rates.
Plus, the vast majority of kids using tablets and phones aren’t doing anything remotely connected to programming or coding.

Very similar here, kids are 4, 8, 11, 12.
Only the 12yr old has a phone, and that’s largely due to school sports. My policy for all of them is no phone till they’re 12, and it requires a $100 buy-in so they have skin in the game (money just goes into their bank account, but they don’t know that.)
We carefully manage screen time and new apps require approval; screen time ends at 7:30pm.
Nothing at the table, no TVs in bedrooms, no TV for anyone on school nights after 8pm (unless there’s a big sporting event) only soft music and mandatory reading time on actual books.
I think boredom is very important in inspiring creativity and learning, so we almost force boredom. Also want them outside a ton after school.

Son is 12, almost 13, and daughter is 7. He has a phone that is on kid mode and my wife goes through the phone including messages once a week. No xbox or gaming during the week. Only exception is he gets equal time if he reads before swim practice in afternoons. We’re lucky that he’s a rule follower and a much better kid than I was. No phones or electronics at dinner table at home or in a restaurant for all of us, not just kids.

They need to be bored so that they can use their imagination and play gun fights with sticks outside or go get muddy and breathe some damn fresh air.
10 year old daughter has 2 ipads, ipod, iphone and gizmo phone watch. She also prefers outdoors to being inside unless it's too cold (30's) or too hot (100's).
She likes to take her phone with her outside.

I know a lot of adults who would benefit from similar rules.

I don't have any kids, but I like to think that I would put restrictions on how much screen time my kids would get. I don't think it's good for children to occupy their entire day with tv, video games, etc.
That said, I am completely aware that I know jack shite about the hardships of working AND raising a child. If I had kids, I might be guilty of just throwing them the iPad to get some peace and quiet, and therefore making myself a total hypocrite
That doesn't make you a hypocrite. It just makes you a normal person.
