An away game at Booker T Washington used to be a scary experience
my senior year we played them at their place in football, basketball, and baseball, I told my parents not to come to the games, football was in a torrential downpour so that was a bit of a blessing, we beat them in their gym in basketball and their "people" charged the floor at the buzzer and started attacking us, our head football coach, big black dude, played in he NFL a couple of years, was taking on four or five of them at a time trying to shield us and get us to the bus, all the windows had been broken out, the bus pissed in, when we finally got on the bus we were being pelted with bricks, rocks, bottles, whatever they could pick up and throw, we killed them in baseball, don't recall any fans, for either team, being there, I wouldn't let my girlfriend go to that one

Malls are an outdated business model. They are vestige from the peak of urbanization. The bounce-back migration that was accelerated by the Internet has made malls unnecessary. I remember, as a kid in Zachary, we would need to "go to town" to buy anything that was not available at K-Mart and, later, Walmart. No need anymore. Brick and mortar has gone the way of the dodo.

Yep. It was a "no go zone" for the most part. I didnt get treated like that out at Green Oaks though.
Going to games at Spar Stadium was always fun. Had to drive through the ghetto to get there, but I guess hood rats didnt like baseball because they rarely messed with us.

First they closed the Croc store and I said nothing.
Then they closed Build-A-Bear and I said nothing.
Finally they closed the Hooters and there was no one to speak up for me.
Honestly though, an outdoor mall in LA was never a great idea to begin with. It's either too hot or too cold 330 days of the year to walk around more than a few minutes.

The drive on I-20 through Shreveport has to be one of the most depressing sites in the entire country.

My youngest daughter worked there a bit in HS when her mom moved back.

Malls are more of a suburban thing.
If anything is to blame, its the internet. The mall was the only "third place" in suburbs that isn't a library or park. With people spending 2× the time indoors now, its not really a shock.

we played one basketball game out there our senior year, no issues with us but it seemed like a ticking time bomb, never had any issues at SPAR either, and I started going there when it was still called Bonneau Peters Stadium

Green Oaks had shitty pitching and no outfield fence. I felt sorry for their outfielders, they must have run several miles a game.

Not true, Ellerbe Road is our DMZ.
Southern Loop too.

I know there’s a train track between them but connectivity all the way from the Horseshoe to Margaritaville would have helped.

quote:You are correct. The Boardwalk had to file for bankruptcy not long after it opened when it was probably 90% occupied. Also, there was an initiative to save it a few years ago by allowing it to be an open container district, and turning it into a quasi-entertainment district, but the city voted it down. It’s an outdoor mall in Louisiana. Malls are closing all over the country and sometimes it has nothing to do with black people.
I disagree in this case. It went the way of shopping malls, and was exacerbated by poor management.

you guys across the river had some decent facilities, always thought it was a real treat to play in SPAR
My younger brother jacked it out of SPAR when he was 15. He also had two no hitters vs Green Oaks, which in retrospect isnt much...lol.
We had to burn off our infield and re-create it every spring. But we had a fence!

I was pretty proud of hitting a double off the Green Monster at Walbrook off of Jamie Harris my senior year,
I fouled one off of Matt Ford when I was a soph and was proud of that all year...lol

Many responses will try to make this out as a race thing but that does not have as much to do with it as they suggest.
Proceeds to give three reasons, two of which are due to race.

It's not just 'Shreveport gonna Shreveport'. Has anyone ever paid any attention to the Boardwalk's surrounding neighborhood? It's not exactly Southern Trace.
I haven't been down to East Bank in a while, but I'm sure it's the same to a certain extent. It's all restaurants, so maybe there's not as many kids that are being dropped off unsupervised for hours at a time, but there are plenty of locals that hang around without eating/drinking.
