when schools started suspending kids for it. it breaks the habit at a young age
I was going to say something like this. I used to carry one, but then enough places started to not allow them. Eventually I got out of the habit of carrying one.

It has to be a approved safety cutting device.

in 50 years you've only needed a pocket knife 10 times?
Reading is hard

Outside of government facilities where you go through a metal detector, large events and airports I can't think of many other places that would check.
We have a sign on the door at our office that says no weapons allowed but I've never really considered a pocket knife a weapon. In my mind that's open to interpretation

I don't carry one around, but the swiss army knife I got 15 years ago is still the most useful tool I own.
I'll take my swiss army knife over more expensive knives anyday.
Also, isn't a knife with a small enough blade allowed anywhere?

This the enigma of the OT. A discussion about pocket knives goes 13 pages. I bet Chicken didn't anticipate getting a ton of hits from Gerber.

Jones - I was just trying to post this memory. The comment is not aimed at you.
One thing I like is to have a knife to jeep my nails clean. That brings up an old Brother Dave Gardner story. I'll shorten it a little.
*****
Jerome was picked up after a stabbing and made the following statement to the police before his arraignment.
"I was just standing on the street corner cleaning out my fingernails with my pocket knife when he came running around the corner and ran into my knife; 36 times."

You said omg.
That’s not answering my question.

I assumed you were implying that anyone who carries a knife is doing so to maintain an image alone. Which would be dumb. If I misunderstood you, I apologize.

I use to carry a small knife.
They kept taking them up when I flew or went to an event.
I was at Delmar Fair to watch my daughter dance in around 2005 or 2006. They sent me and a granddad back to our vehicles because we had a small Swiss Army knife on our key rings.
As we walked back, he said, “they stopped us. You and me were going to take the fair down with our 2 inch blades. Guess they recognized how suspicious we looked pretending to be here for a dance exhibition.”

My great grandfather died when I was 7 years old. My great grandmother gave me a brand new pocket knife that he had been gifted but had never used.
I proceeded to cut the shite out of my thumb with it in short order and can still see the scar.
I have carried a pocket knife with me ever since except for places where they’re prohibited.

I carry mine everywhere.
Do I need it all the time? No
But it’s good to have it if needed.
I guess it’s the same reason people have trucks. You don’t use the truck for hauling every single day, but it’s good to have it if needed.

9-11. Lost a few pocket knives from carry on backpacks at the AP, forgetting they were in there. Useful tool. Dont need it as much as I used to think I did.
That said, occasionally need one and dont have it.

I had mine confiscated one too many times (high school suspension, courthouse in Athens, frderal building in Athens, airport, etc) so I just stopped carrying it in my pocket but keep it in my cup holder in my vehicle.

At the high school in GA I went to, any size is 7 day suspension and over 4 inch is felony and they call cops.
