What Ever Happened To Arcades?

They were a staple across malls in America. Now since they are being taken out of malls (malls are going away in general) you can't find any respectable places anymore. All the smaller entertainment places don't even have real arcade games anymore. They are mostly filled with ticket games and oversized cell phone games like doodle jump and shite like that.

I understand consoles have become the new norm, but there was something fun about walking into an arcade and throwing down on the joysticks in NFL Blitz, Tekken, Marvel vs Capcom, or picking up guns and shooting people in Area 51, or Time Crisis. Of course you can't leave out the racing games where you could race against 4-5 other people at once. Those were some good times.

That was when arcade game technology was consistently more advanced than the consoles. That hasn't been the case for a while.

The only thing that has really disappeared are stand alone arcades. Of course you can find them all over the coast at children's themed restaurants and go-kart tracks and minigolf and amusement parks.

I'll still play a few rounds of Galaga if I stumble across one: usually at birthday parties at places like Laser Tag.

The social aspect probably has a lot to do with it also. As stated, it was fun to go in and throw a couple quarters down and challenge somebody to matches of tekken and MK. There wasn't online for consoles back then. Now kids can do the same thing from home without having to pay per match

Austin has a few fairly large arcades with pinball machines and old school arcade games: Pinballz - 3 Locations
