Would you hire someone who has a GED instead of a HS degree?

If they show good work ethic, sure.

I've had a handful of kids drop out (before they raised the dropout age here to 18) and only one was because he was consistently in trouble with the law. The others were all for personal reasons, such as working to help support their parent's household or a child. Going back to get your GED shows the initiative to better yourself.

I knew what I wanted to be since I was five years old. Got my GED the day after my sixteenth birthday and had my barber license a year and a half later. I love what a I do and make a very comfortable living.

I've heard of people that got GEDs and became physicians.

I think what matters more is the fact that someone has started taking their seriously.
It's what they do afterward that matters.

I would be reluctant as they have a history of messing up.
You must be either young or naive. Good luck hiring ANYONE who doesn't "mess up."

i like you GLT and know from interacting with you that you're a smart kid, but you show way more than most that you still have a lot of life to live and experiences ahead of you. It's crazy the bubble you must live in.

A guy I use to be pretty good friends with (we are still friends, just haven't talked to him in years) dropped out of HS. He was mixed up in drugs, just didn't have his shite together. He decided to go to rehab, he got clean (he wasn't doing anything heavy. Drinking was probably his biggest problem, but he smoked a lot of weed and did acid from time to time), got his GED.

Went to BRCC so that he could work his way into LSU. He got into LSU, he had a 4.0 GPA. Graduated from LSU, was accepted to LSU law school.. He is now an attorney. In his office, he doesn't have his law degree on the wall... He has his GED.

Means they may very well have something to actually do a good job in the workplace for.

If it is blue collar work, and seems of good character, I may take him over a HS grad.

not finishing high school is beyond just messing up imo. Different kids have different struggles growing up, but i you cant finish high school, I personally dont want to hire you for whatever business im running.

Judgmental much? I turned 18 in October of my senior year, and my father died two weeks later. I was forced to drop out and go to work full-time so my mother would not lose her home. In subsequent years, I attended a community college, and parlayed that into an opportunity to attend Georgia Tech, from which I now hold a degree. I am comfortably retired at 48 years old. Still don't want to hire me? (although I never need to work again)

Actually, just the opposite. Clearly you should not be hiring people.

ok, so what do you call it when HR throws out an application because the applicant doesn't meet the minimum qualifications?

applicant XYZ has a 2.9 and the minimum GPA is 3.5... does HR call and ask why they didn't have a satisfactory GPA? maybe they had to work full time and take care of a dying parent. that's how it works, huh?

Just curious on what type of "degree" you obtained in high school. I only received a diploma.

Ohhh so you are saying you wouldn't give them a second look because there is a company policy on minimum qualification???

Ohh my bad,

I thought you were saying you wouldn't give them the time of day since they obviously didnt have the resolve to finish the easiest part of their life.

No that is not the case at all. I know many who have one and in most cases, abuse at home and or school was the primary driver in them dropping out. That's both male and female. Many were 3.0 + students.

It'll it doing there job. Minimum qualifications are there for a reason and HRs job is the find someone who meets those requirements. That's not judging a book by its cover, that's going into the historical fiction section to try to find a book that you want. We could debate whether some of those standards are adequate or how much leeway HR should allow, but that's an entirely different matter.

Judging a book by its cover in terms of hiring would be basing your hiring on appearance without reviewing a resume, conducting an interview or already being familiar with the applicants work.

GPA rarely plays a role in hiring anyone outside of entry level positions, and then often only if it is a competitive field. If sufficient applicants meet the criteria on entry level jobs, why would HR call to ask these questions, it is time consuming, potentially fruitless, and would need to be verified. How do you verify the validity of the excuse without wasting additional company resources?

Every time you answer you seem to reinforce the fact that you should not be the person hiring people. I mean no offense, but there are reasons these things are done, they are effective generally, though not nearly perfect or flawless.
