What does a city do with its prisoners during a major hurricane?

I can't imagine the logistical nightmare that must be if they do in fact evacuate an entire prison for a major storm. I can't remember if OPP was evacuated for Katrina or not.

Nope. They had them penned in at the bus/train station for some time afterward, and then moved them to other facilities after the roads were passable.

Pretty sure they weren't and many on ground level almost drowned. Not that they are model citizens, but that was another brilliant move by the slime ball Gusman.

nope

They flooded and they had to bring the prisoners out and all get stranded on the Broad overpass and wait for busses to try and get them out of there. They sat on the bridge chained together.

Had a buddy get busted with some pills like 3 days before the storm. His mom wanted to teach him a lesson and not bail him out. Well the storm blew up and we went try and bond him out, and OPP said they weren't doing any prisoner transferes that we would have to wait for the storm to pass.... well the storm passed and about 10 days after he was no where to be located and opp said they had no record of ever booking him. He had disappeared.... about 3-4 weeks after the storm he was able to contact me and was at a prison in north la. And I was able to get him out. All charges were dropped by nopd for loss of evidence...

I'm sure NoLa or BR would just release the prisoners as long as they promise to return after the storm.

Not everybody in prison has done something that warrants execution. This is especially true with the current state of our drug laws. I'm not a bleeding heart either but I don't think anyone should be left in their cell with the possibility of drowning although I'm sure a few of them there deserve it.

sorry I answered his question and shared a story

I think most residents of Orleans parish remember the pics of the inmates stranded on the bridge

And no he didn't learn his lesson... I actually hate the dude now but that's another story

In New Orleans, they make sure the door's locked tight and walk away.

I remember reading an article years ago that the water supposedly reached chest level on the ground-floor. The prisoners were in there for a couple of days.

For the "Let 'em drown" crowd, we don't know what they were currently incarcerated for. Hypothetically, I'm sure it plausible some haven't even had their arraignment yet. Imagine getting popped with a urinating in public or a public intox, Hurricane Katrina looms near, the Judges evacuate and the city essentially shuts down. You're left in a fricking cell with God knows who to (possibly) drown.
