What do you tip at a restaurant?

I got chastised for leaving a 16% tip. My buddy said that the normal is 20% now. Did the standard 15% changed recently to 20%?
At that rate, I wouldn't be surprised if the people bringing the food is making more than the people who cook in the kitchen.

Typically 20%. Had bad service Thursday night, tipped 15. Had great service at pluckers a few weeks ago, tipped 50% (not much $$ wise from Pluckers).

Europeans think americans are fricking weird for tipping.

Their menu prices are also extremely high because they pay all servers hourly wages.

Probably because they pay their servers differently so you don't have to tip.
And I usually go 20% unless the service is bad.

20%
I appreciate good service and like to make sure those people are taken care of.
And yes I do tip on alcohol even if ordering bottles of wine

I don't give a shite what they think about what I do. I think they do some stupid shite and I am sure they don't care what I think.

A little note. Tip a little higher if you go somewhere for breakfast and get great service. That bill could easily be more than half of a dinner bill and the server works just as hard and relies on tips also.

Agree.
Some of the lunch places I go to I end up getting water and a simple lunch and the total might be $6 or $7. I will usually leave $3 for that.
Happened today at a Vietnamese place

Double the sales tax and round to the next dollar

15% then round up.
Unless they really go out of their way and are attentive
Then 20%
