The world has gone from reading something in the news or watching the news and being forced to wait to interact with someone on the phone, or in an email to voice their opinion. This forced them to collect their thoughts and form an actual opinion. Now a days, people have access to instant feeds of people spewing bullshite out of their mouth without thinking about anything. People complaining about anything and everything hoping that something sticks (see stupid bitch suing nephew over a hug). Whatever can get this person their 15 minutes of fame.
Of course the 2nd part of that is the laziness of the general population. They hear something on the news and rather than do their own research to form their own opinion and ideology they take the media's word for it and stick to it as truth. When often times, the media has their own biased reasons for which side of the fence they sit on.
America will only go as far as social media and the mainstream media lets us. If we continue to live under their wing and take their stories as truth, then we will crumble and it will be our downfall. Moreso than any terrorist cell, etc.

all these people are generally stupid, close minded, and refuse to think logically and rationally towards issues that they disagree with

It's almost dangerous how badly our country and society in general are divided, and this "us against them" mentality with regard to any sort of belief is destroying our country.
Conservatives who hate liberals and vice versa. Atheists who hate Christians, Christians who hate gays. Different races and creeds hating each other.
You people doing this are the problem, not the solution.

Yeah, it's pretty sad it's gotten so bad that it takes a national tragedy to actually bring us together. It's gotten so bad in fact I'm not sure that a disaster will bring us together anymore. If another 9/11 happened on Obama's watch, this board would want his head on a pike and blame the liberals for allowing this to happen. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm convinced there is almost nothing that can bring the nation together. Maybe the events of "the Martian", but even a Mars mission in and of itself wouldn't do it largely to many saying it's a waste of money and we have our own problems here to take care of before worrying about space.
