I thought about buying a ton of rice and beans last night after reading some of this coronavirus stuff to have on hand so I wouldn’t have to go to the store for a couple of weeks if something were to happen.
Worst case scenario is that we eat red beans and rice frequently this spring.

I knew people with bomb shelters during the Cold War.The 80’s had the Survivalists.Then we had the Y2Kers and now the Doomsday Preppers.Doesn’t really bother me but I don’t want to spend my life worrying about things that might happen.

You can buy a year's worth of food for your family from Costco for like $1,000. Storing it will probably suck. But, that is no different than buying a life insurance policy, imo.
For the record, I am not prepared and will probably die on day 2 without power.

I know a pretty wealthy guy who has stockpiled a lot of weapons, food and vehicles for this reason. Like, hundreds of not thousands.
To me, it looks less like "survival" or prepping, and more like someone who wants to rule the rubble and become something akin to Negan from The Walking Dead or Lord Humungus from The Road Warrior
I think the rich ones would get killed by their own people inside of a week. That's just a natural progression after the loss of society, authority and all criminal consequences.
I don't think any of us could handle real Armageddon. Some would survive, of course, but I think it would have more to do with luck than anything else.

Vacuum sealed white rice has a shelf life of 30 years...vacuum sealed beans has a shelf life longer than that. I have 10 lbs of each stored in our pantry as a just in case.

I think the stuff you see on TV is just over sensationalized. I'd bet there are way more people with stockpiles than you think and there are probably a couple of people you know with some kind of stockpile and you just don't realize. If you stockpile slow and steady, it doesn't take a terribly large amount of time or effort to build up a stockpile and it sure as hell isn't interesting enough for a TV show. When you go to the store, if you need two cans of corn for dinner, you buy three or four cans. If you need a bag of rice, maybe you buy an extra. The extra goes into the pantry for a rainy day.
The space to store everything properly is really the hard part for most people. Otherwise, it's just buying a couple extra things every trip and slowly building up over time.
My mom and dad used to do it on a small scale when I was growing up. They weren't preparing for armageddon, but when I got older I realized that they were making sure we were ready for hurricane season by buying a little extra here and there during the winter. We never went out and bought stuff when a storm came. We just busted out the camp stoves and cooked what they'd already put up in the pantry. Between the pantry and the freezer, I can't remember going through a hurricane and having to eat milk and bread sandwiches instead of regular cooked meals. If a hurricane didn't come one year, we'd just eat through the stockpile until it was time to start building it back up to keep it fresh and rotated.
Sounds like a wise way to go about things to me.

One valuable thing I gleaned from that show is that non essential luxury items like cheap booze, cigarettes, sugar, etc can be super valuable bartering items.

asteroid / meteor event scares me but honestly you wouldn't want to survive that.
We all do a little prepping if possible.
If we have a few extra $s we keep it handy just in case....
