They don't call them dumbbells for nothing. This looks like the gym I frequent. Douchey (i learned this term and its meaning here) looking affliction/flatbill dudes staring at themselves in the mirror while playing with dumbbells or doing bicep curls with 135 lbs on the Smith machine.
I wouldn't have noticed him except when I walked past him toward the water fountain, because I would have been either at the bench or the squat rack doing compound exercises such as squats, bench, row, overhead press, and dead-lift.
IMO practical strength>>>aesthetics -- but to each his own.
OTOH, dumbshits that don't put their weights back on the rack when they're done...

I do heavy weights, and I never take more than about a minute to rest.
Apparently not that heavy. One minute is not enough recovery for serious strength training.

guy was doing like 135
Might be heavy for him. So what?

I guess if you're 40+ it isn't enough recovery time.

Yes, over the last 5 years, I've spent over $3k on gym memberships alone. I will invest about $1k and get a pretty decent olympic weight setup and good range of dumbells and be done with the gym once and for all.
Unless you get cheap shite I don't see you getting all of that for 1k...

I read in Arnold's body building bible that you should take 2-5 minutes in between sets to maximize your lifts. I'll take his word for it.
I always let people jump in if they need something.

This is correct.

You're not building strength and stamina by doing that. I used to do the same thing in high school. Until I started my strength program when I played football in college, I thought that was the way to go. Our strength coach wouldn't let us rest more that 30 seconds between reps. I puked a lot and could barely do the last set, but I went from benching 275 lbs. to 425 lbs. and squating 315 lbs. to 495 lbs. in three months.

Yep. You lift more weight with your body is rested. Simple as that. 1 minute isn't enough.

I powerlift so stamina has nothing to do with the way I lift. The limited rest you posted above is not ideal for strength gains. I have also never seen anyone increase lifts that much in that short a period of time unless they were new to lifting.

That's why you can't gain mass. You know it's true. As do we, so don't bullshite.
Posted on 3/20/14 at 10:02 am to DanTiger
So how much rest should you have?
Posted on 3/20/14 at 10:06 am to DanTiger
You put on the most mass and gain more strength with concentrated, heavy lifts. If you're waiting a minute or less in between reps it's basically a high rep workout and that's more for cutting.
Sure you can add strength and mass like that. Just takes much, much longer to do so.
That's why college athletes typically gain the most weight/strength in their earlier years.

Depends. On heavy sets or really major exercises like bench/deads/squat that is where extra rest is needed. Heck, on squats alone just to take on/off wraps will be a few minutes. Now on arm exercises and low weight exercises, I can do a minute between sets.

I went from 185 lbs. to 245 lbs. using that workout regiment. Of course, I started eating right too.
