Stores have this budgeted already.
If I notice at the store I fix it, if later I don't worry about it.

It is easy to say you will do the right thing and pay for the item.
Unfortunately, my wife recently had this dilemma involving a large sporting goods retailer and the purchase of a baseball glove. At the end of the day, we landed on the side of the store being out its money rather than a kid losing his/her job for an honest mistake here at Christmas.
We frequent this store and figure it will balance out over time.

I would never notice, because I don't typically look at my receipts.

Simple decision.
Ask yourself this question:
If you packed all your things up and got home and noticed the item you paid $80.00 for was NOT in your car, would you drive all the way back to the store and get your item?
If so, then go back and make it right.
If not, keep your free item.
It works both ways.

This. I don't treat it as some morality play. Sometimes I get fricked, sometimes I do the fricking. It's how the world works.

That happened to me with a $500 lawnmower at HD two years ago.
We called from the car and told them to charge our credit card again. It took several calls to get everything sorted out but the whole situation left me thinking that they really didn't give a frick and seriously questioning whether I would go to the trouble of informing the store if it ever happened again.
When the indifference/laziness of the average worker makes you rethink your basic honesty, our world has seriously gone to shite.

If it's a local moms and pops store, I will always pay for what I take...
Retail stores on the other hand, nahhh
Academy once rang up a $80 paintball gun barrel for $8, then messed something up and only charged me 4 dollars for it
those clowns also once charged me $12 dollars for a $60 football, but I ain't said shite lol

Nothing, I've had items that I bought some how not make it back to me so it's all good.
