The worst are the ones who "have" pets. Like 6 years ago. Somewhere in there....

I don’t understand the value in hoarding. OT psychs need to explain.
A lot of it came from the Great Depression. People had literally nothing. They lived in ramshackle huts. My grandfather had everything he owned as a boy in a cigar box. They would have to move a lot for work, or if they couldn’t pay the rent, sometimes in the middle of the night. Times were hard, real hard.
So he decided when he grew up, he never wanted to HAVE to move, and never wanted to HAVE to throw anything away.
He wasn’t a hoarder really, but he had sheds full of just stuff. But that’s where the mentality came from

I’ll never understand this mentality.
It is a mental illness.
I’m not a hoarder, but i have family members who span the range from mere ‘packrats’ to hoarders... As a result, i hate any kind of clutter.. i’m actually a purger; not sure if that’s an actual term, but what i do is i go to the opposite extreme- i throw almost everything away, even stuff i might need one day- because i’m so averse to the clutter, pack rat, hoarding illness.

If they have money, gradually steal bits of what they have and sell it back to them.

The difference between a hoarder and a collector is curation.
If she has reliable access to her stuff and catalogued, you may have a gold mine. Or at least an easier time getting rid of it.

Trauma is the root cause from just watching the show
Like no food on the table as a kid or never processing loss of a family member.

It's usually instigated by some kind of life trauma..usually the loss of a loved one. The hoarding is something they can control. It's not about the things as much as it is controlling their life. The things come to symbolize control and security.

My mom is, but not to the extent of those shows. She recently moved and I got a dumpster and just had 1 big fight with her and threw all the bullshite away. She was pissed for a few days and then was fine.

If you watch the shows, you know that it is impossible to reason with these people.
Never met one or watched the show but if that's true I would just ignore THEIR problem since its impossible to reason with them.

Advertise for a garage sale at their house on a saturday. Pull up early and watch the show

I'm a hoarder myself, but I prefer the term collector.

that's bc you're predictably dumb.
So I’m predictably dumb because I said you would be a good candidate for the show hoarder? Which was based off of your response that was filled with anger towards a question about someone asking a legitimate question about a problem?
I mean wow.

Why dont you busy bodies get a life of your own and stop worrying about everyone else?
Look man, you need to chill out.
