I think this comes from focusing on what others have and not what you have.....or you're just really bad with money

No shite. Anyone who couldn't live a comfortable, debt-free existence on 150K might be doing something wrong.
On topic: I would say it varies by region. If you make 150K in Baton Rouge, you are probably doing better than someone who makes 350K in New York City.

I don't quite understand what you mean by comparing apples to apples and underperforming. Should I only compare myself to other engineers? If I'm not the highest paid engineer in the world am I underperforming? By comparing yourself to the national average, you determine how comfortable you can live. Obviously everything runs by supply and demand. And if the demand is set by the average person making 50k, anyone making more will be able to live a little more comfortably. I think it's a great way to assess your income.

Wow, really? Surely you have some assets. You may not have disposable income or fluid assets but surely with a household income that high you have a nice house, a couple of nice vehicles and maybe a few nice toys, right?

I guessing the COL difference between BR and NYC isn't quite that substantial.

Price real estate in both locations and get back with me on that one.

Just got back from NYC. Was told that the average apartment price in Greenwich Village is like $3500 to $4000 per month. I don't think you need 350k/year to afford that, but 150k would go fast.

350k working in NYC could get you a mansion in the suburbs of NYC easily

A mansion in the NYC suburbs for $350k? Sign me up.
Or did you mean $350k income. I'm really tired this morning so comprehension may not be my strong suit today.

a 350k income

OK, so I exaggerated almost as much as the 150k guy saying he's a poor.

I am responding to the apparently widely held disbelief that anyone makes money.
When an educated person, such as yourself, says his household income is $xxxx, the incredulous come running out with the nationwide median household income to cast doubt on the claimed income.

Damn this thread exploded since I last saw it. Has the board come to a consensus on what constitutes upper middle class for a Louisiana family?
