No.
You just might not be able to live in the best school zone.

I want a 20,000 sq ft house next to Tiger Stadium. Why can’t I have that?

You can easily live on 100k and have a nice home in Madison, Alabama which has outstanding public schools.

I want tiger stadium and lease it back to LSU. Anyone know a good realtor?

Very difficult for some. People don’t like being told they can’t have something. Or they feel entitled to it because someone else can afford it. I would LOVE a new truck. I can’t afford one right now because I bought a house instead. Just have to deal.
My first house was 40 minutes from my office and I paid like 125k for it. It wasn't ideal but it was what I could afford at the time. Later in life when we could afford something close, we moved.

well as a parent in this situation i'd argue that its easier for my kid in college to get a job having her own transportation and i don't have to drive her back & forth to college
Sure. I think the difference is what kind of car are you getting your kid if you are getting them one.
My family had lesser means and I went to private school with a bunch of kids with more means.
I drove a 10+ year old ford ranger, and later in high school a 5-6 years old oldsmobile alero, while I had a lot of classmates who had brand new/recently used Jeep wranglers, lexus cars, etc.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I think people have a poor perspective on the wants and needs in life and what can be attainable on a certain income.

this is where it gets debatable. I don’t think there are all that many neighborhoods in good school zones with plentiful homes in that price range.
Then why live there? In our country you are free to move around where ever you like. If I can't find a better job, but can't afford to live in a good neighborhood...why would I love there.
And it's not debatable, I showed you a ton of examples. Your referencing the top 10 most expensive cities and assuming that's how they all are.
Look free market forces are a great thing. The most desirable real estate cost a shite ton. Sorry but making 100k a year doesn't mean you should get to live in the city center. Or city in general.
If you want to live in that area...fine but you are going to be forced into locations that are not as nice as the burbs.
This whole thing has gotten absurd...it started as what is middle class to....I don't see how someone making only 100k can survive...to yea but a family of 4 can't afford to live in a 3000sf house in good neighborhood in a large metro.
Well no shite. Sorry but middle class where not meant to live in the same location as the wealthy and upper class. To bad so sad...don't like it? Get a better job.
The numbers are what they are, I laid them out for you. Take out the top 10 cities and you can live well if in the middle class. Nice house in a decent neighborhood with play money.
Sorry can't afford one of the painted ladies or a beach house in Malibu while driving a limited Escalade, but overall a nice house, nice car and a great life is easily obtainable especially with a household income of 100k.

What you should have said is "it would be hard to support a family on $100k the way I'd like to support a family".
However, if you re-arrange some priorities, you can send your kids to private school and live in a decent neighborhood on that income. You'll have to work longer and your vacations will be few and far between, but these are decisions/trade-offs people make every day in the middle class.

Middle class is around 100-400k household income, IMHO
In a good sized city and better suburbs it can feel like that, but it's not reflective of the rest of the country, which I'm sure you know

these threads are so predictable.
there's absolutely no way to quantify this. 'middle class' is a state of mind and i'd argue plenty of people making under 100k are 'middle class' and plenty of people making well over 100k are not.
the standard of living in this country is off the charts so unless you're living in government housing, you can be 'middle class' on just about any income.
dave ramsey shows how you can do it at almost any income level.

just because you are middle class compared to your social circle doesn't mean you are middle class in the real world

Yeah but no one wants to hear that. It’s all about living this luxurious life. No one is entitled to dick.

The OP was too open ended. To take it further and to attempt to get everyone on the same page, it needs to narrow down to a location.
Take Baton Rouge for example. What would be a middle class income for BR?

shite. If I made 100k, I would consider myself “well-off.” I’d be able to do almost anything I want.

we all think that
then we get there and your wants just get more expensive

For a family of 4? Depends on where you live but I would say anywhere from 80-225k.
Posted on 2/10/20 at 12:30 pm to Centinel
Most of the middle class in this area live in the burbs like Denham Springs. It's not an expensive place to live. You can buy a small house for 150k.

Don't judge me just because I went from wanting a little cabin in North Georgia or Western NC to wanting 100+ acres in Idaho or Montana. On a nice trout river.
