You are right but making 100k is not that hard as a family. That is any trade person and a teacher or secretary in most places. Home prices in swla have went up do to the growth to reflect it.

Again my numbers are sound for most places. Yes everywhere hasn't seen the wage growth swla has, but most places didn't have the oil downturn in the 80s and 90s keeping wages down.

Sure bro. Keep telling us how the "norm" is trying to live in a desirable part of a large urban area and not being able to afford it, then complaining how housing is unaffordable nation-wide.

I think he is saying lake Charles is a bubble. He is wrong...atleast along the lines of jobs outside of the major projects and the two biggest are pretty much complete.

I’ve never said that’s the norm and I’ve never complained about housing prices. What are you talking about?

Oh my bad. Yea he is stupid with that.

That's like the guy in NYC that is an engineer lecturing me about how engineers don't make enough money...well no shite I make more than him and he lives in NYC. Guess you do think that.

If you aren't getting a cost of living adjustment to move to these big cities that cost a shite ton....well you are stupid for doing it. If you choose to do it without the adjustment well than stfu and don't complain.

No, I'm saying GreatLakes and people like him live in a bubble, assuming their urban lifestyle preferences and inability to afford it translates to the rest of the country.

Anyone waiting for the government to boost their standard of living is never going to be prosperous or successful in any endeavor.

When you can fully find your 401k and then cover all Bill's which include house, etc.

Being able to shave $19,500 of your annual income into your 401k and still easily afford bills is upper-middle class unfortunately.

That is putting $1,625 a month from your paycheck into a form of savings you can't access until your retire, so it assumes you have even more leftover income for a traditional savings account.

That is not standard middle class IMO.

Sure but if you are investing via 401ks or IRAs that money is taxed as "ordinary income" when withdrawn.

that's b/c there are other tax benefits to those plans and due to this, they require planning. you shouldn't withdraw this money if you're paying more than capital gains rates.

Yeah I think we fall into the upper middle class range and I don't put 20k per year in my 401k

There's a lot more shady shite going on than just capital gains.

not really. that's the argument.

The Buffet Rule

quote:

The Buffet Rule contends that the tax system is not fair because it puts a greater proportional tax burden on wages than it does on investment income. The middle-class shoulder this burden because their income primarily consists of wages subjected to income, payroll, and other federal taxes whereas upper-class income consists primarily of investment income taxed at preferential capital gains rates. It blames tax code bias for an unfair tax system that forces many middle-class workers to pay a larger proportion of their income in taxes than the wealthy do. The Buffet Rule seeks to remedy the bias by requiring millionaires to pay at least 30% of their post-charitable-contribution income in taxes.

It definitely depends on size of family. Also depends on cost of living in your area.

For most of the southeast for a family of 4 I’d say

Poor- under 40k household income
Working class 40-55k
Middle 56k-120k
Upper middle 121k-250k
Wealthy 251k-1 million
Filthy rich over 1 million

my bad, misunderstood. Thought you were saying just my profession was the abnormal thing. But in general it's like that all over. We paid our Chicago guys more/ LA guys way more, Houston more etc. NYC and LA guys were compensated for above market rates.

Now as upper mid level management, no those guys in similar positions on those cities were not compensated enough to make up the cost of living difference. But that was my point to you.

For example, the new college grad thread that was started while ago. The guys nephew says he is moving to Chicago to take a 70k/year job as a mechanical engineer. That's good money, but he could get the same or more somewhere else that is less desirable and has a much lower cost of living.

If he got married and had kids and was only making 100k he would be stupid to stay there if his wife wasn't working.

I know you said it wasn't the norm, but in general people can make roughly the same or more in much cheaper locals if they were willing to move.

Exactly, who the hell maxes the 401k? I put 20k in but that's including my company putting in a shite ton as I have a 3 to 1 match on first 4%.

And if you making 100k why the hell are you putting more than the companies match into 401k instead of doing a Roth?

Again people are stupid and as SFP has pointed out....have zero and I mean zero understanding of financial matters. Not asking people to be a CFO level of understanding, but Jesus basic tax and financial understanding is a few clicks away.

Hell you can even download a full budget in Excel that you can customize to get ahold of your spending. It's amazing the tools that are at our fingertips and is not used.
