Number sign if before numerals, pound sign after numerals and hashtag before word.

When calling into conferences, the automated message says both. "Please enter your conference ID number, followed by the pound or hash key." As far as I can remember, this was the case before Twitter became a thing.

When I was a kid it was the number sign to me. When I got a little older and started using the phone, it became pound.

all three are used in different texts. Can't interchange the meaning. Only the symbol.
