Calling the Drs office to ask the quantity of meds to dispense. Counting 1,2,3,4,5.... Must be pretty easy but multiplying is a different story. How hard is it? 1 bid for 7 days = 14 duh

I'm so glad that "disp q.s. 30 days" is acceptable so I don't have to math things like Lantus pens or know the size of the bottles of liquids or the like.

never understood why it took so long to fill prescriptions.

Well, to understand this, it would probably be easier if you explained what you think the process is. There's lots of lack of communication involved. Patients don't know what their insurance covers. Doctors don't know what a patient's insurance covers. They can get something sent to the pharmacy that the patient can't pay for, but then a good pharmacist (or perhaps the patient) would call the doctor and ask if it could be changed to something else in the same class that would be covered (if they know what is covered). Same goes with knowing what medicine formulations/strengths are actually in the pharmacy and whether switching is appropriate with authorization from the prescriber (which isn't the easiest thing to get quickly).

Reading a script and counting pills is easy, but having the right amount of the right med in stock isn't as easy. Noticing multiple prescribers is another one. I've gotten called on people getting one narcotic from us then another from a different provider somewhere else in town on the same day and trying to fill both- that's time out of the pharmacists day to call a physician. And physicians aren't usually the easiest to get hold of if there's not a partner in the practice taking all the calls. If during business hours, a busy office has little down time, and the pharmacy can either hold for the doctor to get out of the patient room or leave a message (which can take hours to get a response to). Their job goes far beyond that of reading and counting. Pharmacy tech is quite easy, or so it would seem. The actual outpatient pharmacy is both a business with customers and a medical entity with a specialized purpose and has to be run as both.
This doesn't even begin to touch on the field of inpatient pharmacy, which the majority of people probably don't even realize exists and is out of the scope of your thought/question/wonder.

I would suggest moving to a neighborhood pharmacy. They may not have the hours that the chains have, but you will not wait for two hours or longer to get your prescription.

I've called in a prescription to CVS and purposely came back the next day. They still made me wait an hour. That doesn't happen at Ralph's.

Fwiw.. RX currently make about 25% of the current total Healthcare cost at my company and I was told that the providers expect that to grow to 50% over the next decade. Thanks Obama as glorified nurses write scripts to heal you.

I get 9 Prescriptions a month.Only 3 controlled.1 of those is Xanax.

I've used the same Family owned Pharmacy for 10 years.

They would give me medicine in an emergency. Not the controlled stuff.

They're pretty important to me.

They give me great service.I usually call refills in but if I go in they fill mine right away.

Most importantly,they're the Morphine Store.

For whatever it's worth, I have an uncle that graduated pharmacy school. He worked for about year and then proclaimed that he didn't invest all that time and money to "be a fricking pill counter" and he then went to medical school. Now a well respected eye surgeon.

This. Most will give you better service and prices.

As far as what they do? My wife plays a lot of Sudoku, shops online, and looks up recipes on line that she'll never cook.

Clearly he would have to be a smart guy to be and a PharmD and MD, but going all the way through pharmacy school and not realizing it's not for him earlier sounds like he forgot to use some of that intelligence for a while there.
