How can you structure and protect assets so it can’t get attacked in terms of cancer diagnosis without the luxury of quality health insurance.

Maybe move things into a trust or estate? Don’t know, be good questions to ask my financial advisor at next visit or an attorney. People retire early all the time, how do they protect themselves long term from failing health, medical expenses, possibility of needing assisted living, nursing home etc.

He's 66 and has a cute 29 year old Filipina wife. He lives in a 3/2 beach house just south of Dumaguete that costs him $500/month.

Well shite. May need to start putting a little money aside. Sounds like a good way to spend my last few years. Dont think i will run this one past the wife though.

What do people do who aren’t over 65 when they don’t work and have enough money?

Live off the taxpayer.

which is why ill be retiring early to a more “foodie”-friendly place like Malaysia or Thailand, which both have outstanding cuisine at dirt-cheap prices .

I can adapt to the food easier than I can learn to speak Thai. The language barrier is a huge deal. Otherwise, how can you negotiate prices for boom-boom?

As someone thar has a dog and a cat, I can confirm that is an internet rumor because dog and cat food is actually kind of expensive.

Seems like living off of peanut butter and jelly or Spam would be cheaper.

A case each of ramen noodles, potted meat, Vienna sausages and Spam are a hell of a lot cheaper than 50 lbs of Purina Pro Plan protein do food.

I don’t know. Thankfully, when I started my career over 30 years ago, I made the second best decision of my life*, namely I elected to set aside the maximum allowable amount into my 401K and I haven’t touched it since.
Same for me and the wife.

Our youngest (23 yrs old) just finished graduate school, started working for a firm on August 1st paying $72,000/yr with great benefits. I told him to immediately start contributing the max allowable amount to the 401K and don't touch it.

Retirement is a relatively new concept. For most of human history you worked from the point you were able to the point you were not just to survive and help your family. And even when your body was worn out you still found some way to contribute, because it was essential. Having 20-30 years of work free life before you die is wholly unsustainable.

Well, for these folks, the first thing they do is contemplate the finance lesson they have just been taught.

401K's are great and need to be utilized to the max your company is willing to give you but keep in mind, your 401K alone will not save you. Irresponsible spending over the years can still leavve you in a big bind come retirement.

The first thing I tell my kids is pay off your house.

Depends on the interest rate. If you're on one of those sub-3% mortgages, you're better off maxing out the 401K and a Roth and slow-rolling the mortgage.
