Less than $100 in 1993. It wasn't a carnival, but was still fun. The main thing is that my son had fun, even though he doesn't remember it now.

Some of my favorite birthday parties as a little kid were at the local park, where we had cake and hot dogs. I got to play on the playground equipment and see my friends on a weekend. Nothing bad about that.

Hot dogs and hamburgers $30
Cake from publix 20 bucks or so
Balloons 20 bucks
Party favors/gift bag stuff 20 bucks
Big bottle of white wine $20
12 pack of good beer $18
Case of cheap beer $18
Already had cups/plates for adults.
Disney paper plates $5 or so
So about $150 bucks total

That's my wife's department. I don't get into her business.

First one's 1st: probably $350 ish.
First one's 2nd: $5 for a cake mix and powdered sugar for the icing (had a 5 week old for that one, so that birthday barely got celebrated).
First one's 3rd & 4th, maybe $250 each.
Second one's 1st,, about $300.
Second one's 2nd, maybe $125. Mardi Gras theme, so we already had most of the decorations.
I'm a pinterest person so I do a lot with pretty little, each party was well planned & decorated. It's for the kids to look back on, sure, but just as much for the adults.
Since their birthdays are so close (five weeks between them) we may do joint parties for a couple of years before we get into the mega themed princess & pirate extravaganzas that I anticipate for ages 7-9.
FWIW, I most likely go overboard bc mine and husband's birthdays are just before Christmas and neither of us had hardly any parties growing up. That sucked.

My son's first birthday was such an ordeal I vowed to never throw them anything huge until they can remember the birthday party.
