Sears had everything. If they didn’t they would order it for you. If they played it right they could have become Amazon.

They sorta were the Amazon of their time. Too bad they didn’t have the vision to realize the potential of the internet. Sears was still a behemoth when the internet started taking off. They were in a prime position. But they let their chance slip by.

We had a 5 and dime with soda fountain in my town in the 70s.

It was awesome.

The restroom was a nickel though.

still remember trying to keep from peeing my pants when we were on the way to sears after hearing 'our package was in' and going to the back and getting a gigantic cardboard box we couldn't open until we got home.

i dont have time to build as many as you do but back in the day i would go to the model aisle and sit there and drool over the star trek, tanks, hot rod cars & ships.

The model isle at KMart is what got me started. It was about 1978 when momma let me get this kit that started it all…

You can still buy the same exact kit but now it’s a Revell model. But it’s still made from the same molds.

I’d say or I somewhere north of 90% of all items other than groceries that were in my house as a kid came from Sears.

You mean literally every pair of jeans I had until about 3rd grade?

The apex was corduroy Toughskins. You’d be zip, zip, zipping down the hall at school like a boss.

i loved models so much for my birthday one year my mom & dad signed me up for the 'aurora model of the month'.

BEST BIRTHDAY GIFT EVER! 12 models..all built and still on the shelves at my house in Monroe. I still get tingles thinking about how excited I was every month to get another mystery model in the mail.

By the way, I am pretty sure they’ve brought back Aurora models. I think Hobby Lobby sells some of them.

Or maybe I’m thinking of Atlantis.

Got to be up there with biggest business missed opportunities of all time. Seems like with their existing infrastructure they could've just digitizer the catalog and been relatively home free. East to say now I suppose.

Basically when I was a kid, going to Sears meant something like clothes, shoes, or something for the house. Going to KMart meant TOYS!

Spot on.

not really. their generous pension program killed sears; they could have possibly held on and been a competitor if they didn't have that anchor around their neck.

Most here will see this picture and think Disney put those kits out for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies when really those models outdate the movies over 30 years.
