What can you tell me about Six Sigma Certification?

I have heard of this vaguely for years, but didn't really care to further research it until relatively recently. I guess I have 4 questions:
1) What is it?
2) what fields can it be applied to?
3) can the certification on a resume help separate from other candidates for same job?
4) if the answer to #3 is "no," is the knowledge you get by completing the courses still beneficial in making you better/more efficient in whatever position you are in?

Operation/business/process improvement methodology

Basically any.

Depends on the industry and job, but yes. It did for me.

Its a lot of common sense, but I have used certain tools, yes. Its far from rocket science.
I am certified in LEAN and Six Sigma, paid for by my company, and I would say I am happy I did the classes and work to get them.
Of course, it is what you make of it. Could be worthless, could be a checkbox on a resume, or could be useful in your job.
I'm between the latter 2.

In simple terms, Six Sigma is a process improvement methodology. There are different levels of "belts" that you can obtain.
If you are an analyst or are trying to get some type of process improvement/project manager job then it is extremely beneficial. Lean and Six Sigma started in the manufacturing world, but it has spilled over into the service industry. almost every major company is doing some form of process improvement to become more efficient and cost effective.

If you can't even be efficient enough to google it on your own then you don't qualify.

Would you laugh at someone that had his 6-sigma level embroidered on his sweatervest? Because I saw that in the ATL airport last night

This was the hot new thing at my company about 8 or 9 years ago. It was going to revolutionize everything we did. They even put together a team of "black belts". Far as I could tell they paid them each an exorbitant amount of money to just sit in a room thinking shite up. Fast forward to today and I can't remember the last time I even heard the words "six sigma" spoken by anyone here.

Well it sounds like your company self certified a team of idiots and wasted a bunch of money. It isn't some fad. It's simple data driven methodology.

It depends, there are several universities and colleges that have courses on different levels of certification, but they are pretty pricey. ASQ is often the go to association for certification. A lot of companies will internally train and certify their employees.

Depends on how much of your time you can allocate to it. I did it full time for 6 months doing projects for the company. Had to complete like 6 projects with a certain amount of dollar savings and time savings.
The cert exam is very easy if you are decent at math. That + successful projects = certification.
This was years ago so I can't remember specifics, sorry. I believe I also had to teach a couple classes on the material which wasn't bad.

No, I know every one of the guys they put on the "Six Sigma" team. All very intelligent and experienced guys. Far as I know they're all still with the company. One of them in fact has his office right across the hallway from mine.

Idk, but when I worked for CAT, they tried to get me to go to HQ and get training for it. I think it's just flow between different branches of large companies. Yes, you get paid more and it'll separate you when applying to large companies
Eta: They only offered it to people with college degrees and good aptitude scores

No one who makes that kind of money would embroider a sweater vest.

I would point and laugh.
This isn't an MD Its common sense and I suspect anyone smart enough to attend any decent college could do it.
