What can LSU do to force Baton Rouge to improve the city?

I have long thought that LSU did not flex its muscles with the city to force improvement and change.
While LSU is a nice island in the middle of what has become a shithole (and getting worse), even an island must protect it shores and surrounding waters.
The water campus, etc., is a nice thing if it happens as planned. LSU should have been buying up real estate around campus decades ago and should have taken a more active effort in cleaning up the ghetto around Highland and Nicholson.
There is no doubt LSU loses prospective students due to BR crime, even if it is isolated mostly away from campus. Especially out-of-state students. There is an LSU parents Facebook account and many of the posts are about crime. A lot of potential students parent's post there asking about crime.
What can LSU do?
I think using sporting events as a bargaining tool. Threaten to play more games, in all sports, out of town or out of state, if certain changes are not made.
That would make businesses that rely on LSU sports more proactive and involved in local politics, and would put pressure on local politicians to make changes.
Use the wealth and political power of LSU alums to influence elections and policy to benefit LSU.
Spend money on lobbying efforts.

they cant do anything within reason. BR is wayyy too divided to get shite done.
the root of the problem in BR is deeper than most realize. On one hand people in NBR feel disenfranchised. On the other people on the other end feel like tax monies isnt being spent well.

Raze all the run down section 8 and hoods around it.
Chase out the criminals and thugs.
Give college kids and staff a safe place to live.
Purge the crime from that area with extreme prejudice.

I see what you're getting at, but LSU athletics would NEVER say no to more money in their pocket.

It's amazing what LSUPD is able to create in the middle of what is essentially a dying city. Outside of that freak incident two weeks ago, LSU is incredibly safe.

They would have to change the zoning to make LSU campus part of St. George

That would be an empty threat though, and everyone knows it. LSU isn't going to just give up revenue from home games to send a message to BR as a whole.

Wasn't LSU just trying to become a part of BR?
And isn't LSU already moving games from BR to places like Houston, Dallas and Atlanta?
And from what I understand, isn't LSU already buying parcels of land along W Chimes and Alaska streets?
But you make some good points, BR has taken advantage of LSU without providing them with better infrastructure and services.

Not sure what you mean by this. LSU can often make more money by playing games out of state. They should threaten to do more of this.

threaten to move back to pineville

At the very least LSU could acknowledge reality.
There should be an official warning to incoming students that the streets named after presidents are dangerous and to be avoided.
Maybe that would embarrass the city enough to do something about it.

Lsu can barely keep the rest of its campus together, much less flex it's nuts on the community.
The athletic buildings and new rec center are pretty sweet but the buildings of higher learning are going to shite.
And the people running it are just as political and shifty as our state Congress.
Lsu won't do anything because it's more reactive than proactive

Maybe the once a year big opening football game, or the baseball series in Houston, but in other sports, not a chance.

I've always thought that LSU should have its own representative on the Metro Council, because the university plays a major role in BR. Sadly, what's best for LSU, and seemingly for anyone outside of the residents of north BR, is not part of Mayor Broome's agenda.

And what if the states says we will cut back on funding to LSU. Can LSU realistically make up the difference in lost revenue?

Agreed. Sadly, it's so much easier for some to blame the boogeyman than to do anything about the real problem.

Ditto.
One is a reality and another is a fallacy
