I grew up there back in the 70-early 80s and loved it. Great place then...don't know now. Should be nice.

We bought in Uptown. We looked at Lakeview when we were shopping around and I was very impressed. That strip down Harrison had a very upscale (read: Not Louisiana) feel to it. Eventually, because we're city people we chose Uptown because it had a bit more city feel to it and was not as "new". Being new isn't a bad thing though.

The money has evidently been set aside for the streets to be fixed and there is a real push in the area for this to finally be done. But knowing New Orleans, it could be 5 years.

s this a good area for a couple in their mid 30s with no kids? where would you be looking? or where else? bywater, uptown, etc.?

I've lived in Lakeview for most of my life (about 30 years).

What questions do you have?

Property taxes have gone up a LOT since Katrina.

Streets are horrible.

It does seem a lot more safe sine Katrina.

Houses and lots are getting more expensive every day.

What questions do you have?

Also, if your budget is $900k, this is what you can get Uptown. You'd never have to move out of this (just update kitchen):

I think that house needs updating. Bathroom, kitchen, wallpaper and pool are all in rough shape. You would need to put in another 150K or so to make it nice.

The two other houses on prytania that are for sale are asking over one million and once you finish updates on this one the price will be north of one million as well.

Yeh but it is common remember? Making 200k at mid 30

I'm talking about as a couple.

Income Percentile

RollTheRock, click the link and plug in some income figures. 200k a year for a couple puts them making more than 90% of the country.

I lived in Lakeview once (before Katrina). It is nice enough, but I prefer uptown. If you have kids... for the mid 300s, Lakeview might be a better bet.

Lived here for about a year now

Pros:
Very safe
No noise
Easy drive to work (downtown)
Nice houses
Neighborhood bar so I don't have to drive

Cons:
Streets suck
Prop taxes are very high
Farther drive for Winn Dixie and gas

Yeah, but they're getting in cheap and without any kids they can upgrade over a few years.

Definite possibility. I looked at that house and passed. Location not the best. Parking is an issue . Plus the work that needs to be done. All in, it's not the best house. You would be around $300 square foot after you're done. I would think you could find a move in ready house for that (I admit its hard) That's why it's been on the market for so long.

I wouldn't live in Lakeview because of the horrible streets. I also wouldn't live Uptown if I were married because of the crime. I lived Uptown almost my entire life and couldn't wait to get away. Have you considered Old Metairie?

The new Lakeview transplants are the worst. Most grew up in Jefferson Parish with an inferiority complex. Now they have an OP zip and they think they are some kind of big deal socialite.

Plus they bitch about streets after knowingly moving to an area with shitty streets and infrastructure post K

Why not just live in Metairie and save a ton of money?

Because then you have to deal with Metairie traffic.

Lakeview is similar to Metairie but you don't have to deal with that. You can get anywhere pretty fast.

I'd rather pay way more to live in Lakeview over Metairie.

Lived in Lakeview for years, but we just bought a house in Vista Park and really like it.

I've lived in Lakeview for a couple years now. I'm within walking distance of Harrison and pretty much everything I'd ever need. Lots of police presence too... Almost too much because they've practically followed me home more than a few times. Streets are inexcusably bad... Some spots almost not navigable. Hence why I wouldn't really want to live in the interior sections of the neighborhood. The public school, Hynes, is really good but limited spots available. Overall, I'm happy with it. Maybe I'll move on up to Lake Vista one day, but that's about as far as I'd go. Good luck!

Maybe you'll be able to find a move-in ready house at $300/sq ft. but it'll be tough.

There is no traffic getting from Old Metairie to anywhere in NOLA. We don't pay the high property tax or deal with te terrible roads. This is the place to raise a family.
