Ya, I find it very weird.

Oh well, I got one of each, so I'm fully covered. They can go frick themselves.

I am guessing you went through a breed specific rescue. They aren't like breeders, these people put out a lot of their own money for vets/food/etc to get these dogs in far better condition than they came into the rescue. The fee helps them some, but not even close to breaking even. The fee is also a way to weed out some people they don't want applying.

nah, she's just a mutt, we got her at a spring training game in FL, the whole extraction of funds and leaving with the dog took about thirty minutes

You can breed good and bad traits out of dogs. If she has such a problem with all of the dogs in the shelter, give her a gun and tell her to go shoot every stray she can find

If you're the instigating type, put up flyers around the office saying that you're breeding your dog and are looking for buyers.

Or I could do it in a passive aggressive way and post in in a FB buy-sell-trade group that I know she looks at a lot while at work.

As long as we're doing stupid comparisons, should black people only breed with other black people?

Seems very high for a shelter dog. Probably the same reason, keep certain people from adopting them.

If they were people that weren't above me in the food chain, I would go with the more direct approach. Then again, I'm an instigating type.

Depends what kind of dog you have.

If its just a random pet then I would sort of agree with them but if it is a pure breed hunting dog or something then definitely breed it

What if it was a new designer-breed, and someone offered you a couple hundred to breed your male with her's anyway? What would be the difference?

I thought so too, it was extortion/shaming, right down to the last "you can't leave with that dog unless she's on a leash, oh you don't have a leash? we'll sell you this $5 leash for $30" didn't go to the game to buy a dog, but once the wife and kids started playing with her, I knew it was all over

I stud my dog out. People pay good money. My dog has great traits. I'm doing the canine world a favor letting his genes pass on.

Nothing wrong with it as long as the dog is healthy abd it's not a puppy mill type operation.

The reason people don't like breeders is because they assume every breeder is a puppy mill. Raising hunting dogs is not the same as milling out shi tzus, but that doesn't matter to the uninformed.

The only thing you should worry about is the conditions that the prospective breeding partner is kept in. I certainly wouldn't want to help support a "puppy mill" that treats their breeding dogs poorly.

The other stuff is going to happen regardless of whether purebred puppies exist or not. The problem isn't that there are too many dogs, it's that there are too many people that should never get a dog in the first place, or at least do a better job researching the proper breed for their lifestyle. The people that buy the puppy for their kids and abandon it at the shelter a year later because they didn't realize the dog was going to act like a dog are the people your coworker should go shame. They are the ones creating the false demand.
