Genes dictate what can happen. Environment decides which genes are activated.
If you don't have the gene(s) for, say, bipolar you aren't going to get it no matter how shitty your childhood was. If you do carry the gene(s), you need a proper upbringing to avoid it (but still may get it anyway).
Schizophrenia, for example, is highly genetic. Environment plays into it some, but not much.
