you are correct.

but they are very similar molecules that bind to the same receptor and have nearly identical theraputic effects.

they have different absorption and metabolic profiles

It's a bullshite diagnosis given when something "concrete" cannot be found to explain a patient's complaints.

There's a mental health aspect to it, likely depression (one of the main ingredients in Lyrica is an anti-depressant).

The vast majority of "sufferers" are pre-menopausal women.

My father was diagnosed with it for 15 years. It was so bad sometimes he didn't even get out of bed or had to walk with a cane. The doctors tried all sorts of drugs and even proposed the mental angle. After all those years a doctor in Springfield, MO. diagnosed him with polymyalgia rheumatica and he went on a prednisolone regiment for 6 months or so and while he is not pain free he can finally function normal again.

Fibromyalgia is something I've only seen in someone with an already diagnosed underlying psych disorder, usually bipolar, and only in women. Take that for what it's worth.

I believe the medical term is "bitchesbecray". It's Greek, I think.

My mother was diagnosed with it at the age of 65. She wasn't bat shite crazy, depressed or fat. She never took lyrica because of the side effects. She was in extreme pain most of the time. Some of you need to stfu when you have no experience with it personally.

Yeah, it is mostly psychosomatic.

My wife has a few friends with that diagnosis. Two of them, developed 'fibromyalgia' after their first child and another was having marital problems. They all complained and whined about how miserable they were and that there had to be something their doctors were missing... Or not properly treating...

Fast forward 3 years, the new moms got used to the care-giver role, they lost their baby weight, ate healthier, started yoga classes... Their 'fibromyalgia' apparently went into remission.

The other woman and her husband apparently worked things out, she goes to a chiropractor (glorified masseuse) weekly and she is feeling better...

So you're thinking like I am that this is a bs diagnosis? And Heyy :)

I am not sure if it is a BS diagnosis; what I would say is that the professional literature is mixed on the issue. If at some point the etiology is better defined, then we might get closer to a more definitive conclusion.

That said, some folks just simply seem to have some screwed up neural systems that seem to express themselves in middle age or later.

Hey back! :-) Good to hear from ya. I have been a bit busy with work and haven't had much down time in the last few weeks.

Offer for dinner still stands good.

sure. but it is not an anti-depressant. it is primarily used for neuropathy due to diabetes complications/shingles

Again, it is a multiple med, which is the case with many meds. Not sure about the primary use, given what all I have seen it prescribed for. However, it is very prominent in use for sleep disorders, specifically RLS.

Well... at 65 years old, there could be a lot of causes for chronic pain besides fibromyalgia. Neuropathy, degenerative muscle/joint diseases, auto-immune diseases, hormonal imbalances, and chronic illnesses could all contribute to some form of chronic pain.

That is a lot different from a healthy mid-20 to mid-30 woman who suddenly couldn't get out of bed....

It's pretty much BS. Patients with this are folks with depression and/or anxiety who have problems expressing it and have it manifest with more physical symptoms. If you want to read some conclusive literature about this perspective look up Nortin Hadler, M.D. the chief of Rheumatology at UNC.

In 9 years of practice, I've noticed that almost every patient with "fibromyalgia" has nearly the same habits/issues:

1.) Obese or at least overweight
2.) Smoke...a lot
3.) Drink tons of Diet Coke
4.) Stay in a dark, cold room nearly all day
5.) Have some type of family/marital problem

If I were to try to treat every single pain, I'd never get anywhere. So I tend to try to get them more motivated and more physically active. It's more productive in the long term and either they'll get better or they quit coming to therapy.

Fibromyalgia is a buzz word that instantly alerts clinicians to the fact that the patient is either crazy, has a mood disorder, addicted to pain medicine, or all of the above. Another neat trick is to inquire about allergies. Often patients with fibromyalgia will have 5 or more medical "allergies", many of which may be to less potent narcotic analgesics. (i.e. "Only Dilaudid works for me"). Most will always complain of vague abdominal pain and have had most or all of their optional internal organs removed (appendix, gall bladder, uterus, ovaries) often with little clinical indication.

exactly this. whenever i see this on a new patient's medical history i know it's going to be a bumpy ride.
