re: What are the animals that could easily beat a man in hand to hand contact

Main problem is that human have no physical defense against attackers, we have no hides, skin, or body hair that can lessen damage from an attack. Additionally, we don't have horns or other appendages that can be used for both defense and to attack. We don't even have extremely strong bones.
Think about it this way, many of the animals mentioned in this thread have weak points that if you can some how attack that weakness maybe you can win. On our bodies almost every point is a weakness, a single attack in most cases could easily disable/kill a strong human in seconds.

Hell if you only had a pistol you still wouldn't have much of a chance against a lot of animals. A 3 inch knife will barely do anything.

Sloth Bear (one once killed 12 and maimed many more)

There probably isn't a human on this planet that could beat a chimp or orangutan in a fight to the death with just a 3 inch knife
They could quite literally one-punch kill most humans.
Orangutan could easily rip your arms out of their sockets.

This comes down to what can a man choke to death, or gouge it's eyes out before dying. My do-not-frick-with list has the big three at the top:
Large Cats
Large Primates
Bears
Those would destroy a human, barring a freak eye injury to begin. But I think a bear/lion wouldn't care. I've always wondered what the largest cat a human could take down was. They are all going to F you up, but say a cheetah. It's a leaner cat, less weight, fast, but small enough to potentially choke, if you could get to it's back and avoid a death rake. Nah, F that, n/m.

The additional problem we have is our brains. We have fear and knowledge and logic. We KNOW how screwed we are and that can not help us. We try to maneuver and think and the chimp is pulling your face off...while taunting you with that maniacal laugh.

I remember reading a story called 'I strangle a leopard barehanded' when I was in junior high...seemed easy.
His name was Carl Akeley...

Was coming to post this
According to that thread, 90% of the OT could easily choke out a pissed off 90-pound German shepherd without much of a problem.

I'd beat a dog.
I'd sacrifice my left arm and stab it in the throat and eyes with the other arm.

And I'll add that we know Vladimir Putin will tame any of them bare-handed and bare-chested too.

Daeodon - They could grow to be six feet high at the shoulder and weigh thousands of pounds. Fossilized remains of their teeth suggest that they were omnivorous, dining both on animals (some as large as modern-day cows) and plants. It's telling of their dominance of the food web that they belong to a family of animals nicknamed "hell pig" and "terminator pig."
Kelenken - largest of the Terror Birds
Arctodus simus - short faced bear - It stood 8–10 feet (2.4–3.0 m) tall on hind legs[7] while a large specimen would have been 11–12 feet (3.4–3.7 m) tall with a 14-foot (4.3 m) vertical arm reach, and 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 m) high at the shoulder when walking on all fours, it was tall enough to look a man in the eye. A. simus was highly carnivorous.
