We made our daughter wait until she turned 12. She was the last kid in 7th grade to get one.

With her being involved in many after school activities and events not always ending or starting on time I like her having it so she can call us or other family, etc for rides. I like the check ins she's able to give when off with other people.

I agree that at a certain young age it's stupid, but we live in a evolving world with technology.

Honest question - what could possibly have changed that much in 14 years that I as a young driver was just fine without a cell phone but now a young driver absolutely needs one?

So you wouldn't want your young driver to have access to a phone once they are driving on their own?

Biggest thing that has changed is price. It's cheaper now to have a basic cellphone. Most parents now could easily afford a cellphone for their child...wasn't the case 14 years ago.

Also...availability of payphones. Back then...payphones everywhere. Now not so much. What happens to your teen if they get stranded?

It isn't a necessity, but should be determined by each family on their own. I had to be away from my family for a few months when we moved to TX. My oldest daughter was starting 6th grade and would be going home by herself until my wife got off work. We got her a cell phone since we didn't have a house phone. When she turned 14, we got her a smart phone, then this past summer (age 16), we got her an iPhone 5S.

Give your kid a phone as early as possible.

Once they are hooked, use it as a way to punish them if they misbehave.

Or when they are teens and if they have a smartphone...switch it out to the first cellphone you had and see them freak out while you tell them they can still play this super fun game called snake.

I got my first cell phone freshman year of college in 2001. I did not miss out on anything not having it before then. I think college age is appropriate. I don't think a high school kid needs a cell phone.

You don't think we live in a little different world today than 2001?

Just got my 11 yr old one for Xmas. She's the good kid. My son will be up next and he'll get one at 15. He's a bad arse.

She was last in 6th to get one. Yea people showing kids who's boss and making them wait till hs are simply making their kids the minority and instilling nothing productive in them by withholding common technology.

How early are your children getting phones fin?

Does gender change this? (Meaning your daughter would get one at a younger age than your son got one?)

I am of the opinion that being forced to figure things out on one's own builds character. I rarely used a cell phone as a kid. One time my mom forgot to pick me up from Catholic High after weightlifting during the summer. So I walked home to Kenilworth. I was probably 14. I didn't exactly know the way but I figured it out. I did the same thing a little later on and walked to my dad's house from Catholic, which is near Bocage. I enjoyed the opportunity to figure out what to do and where to go.

So you would be ok with your 14 year old daughter wandering around Baton Rouge streets "figuring things out on her own"?

Yeah that's how teen girls get kidnapped, raped or robbed at gunpoint.

And you don't think it created character and confidence? I have been highly successful in school and work, rising quickly through the ranks. I think activities like these as a 14 year old directly aided in developing the skills I need to be successful in a competitive work environment full of highly skilled people.

I mean when I was like 16 I didn't have a car, but had a bike. I rode my bike to work all the time......in NBR. Looking back I cannot believe my parents allowed me, lil white girl, riding all over NBR by Delmont Library and Winn Dixie and Tony's Seafood by myself on my bike.
