I'm not that narrow minded, it's just that there are no limitations/moderation enforced by the parents from what I can see. Probably because they've got their noses stuck in their phones almost every waking minute as well.

I dont know their argument. We'd get our kids phones as soon as they were doing things alone so we could reach em. I see that as different from giving a whining kid a tablet to shut em up

My son had one when he was in the 5th grade. I see it as no different than he having an iPad or a Kindle.

Oh that's what I did. I had my kid too early for me to have a smartphone to shut him up with. He was probably 4 when I got my first flip phone

My 7 year old has my wife's old I phone with a shattered screen. It isn't hooked up for service, but he plays games on it. Swiping his finger over the shattered screen is building nice callouses on his fingers which should help him learn to play guitar faster.

I'll accede to that, at times, but it kind of comes with what I do for a living, and is usually based on having studied all sides of a situation prior to making a judgement. Not always right but I've got a pretty good track record.

The people who make up our society and are out on the roads driving are getting exponentially worse every day.
Also, how is a 16 year old without a cell phone going to contact the police in the event of an accident? People drive off from accidents all the time now even WITH cell phones, so it doesn't hurt to give a new driver one.
