Westdale Academic magnet - Advice

Anyone have their kids in Westdale K or Pre K? If so, is it any good?

If you have to send your kid to public school in EBR, its your best option.

It's a mixed immersion program. In other words, half the students are magnet and the other half are your standard EBR public school student. It's very entertaining to hear your middle school student talk about the weekly fistfight at recess... provided it's not your kid involved.
All in all, it's primer school for BRMHS and Lee Magnet high. Would I rather have my kids in private school, yes. All the magnet mom & dads are pretty much millennial hipsters. PTO meetings can be tenuous...

Go to a private school where you can buy your grades.
My kids go to an academic magnet here in Ellick. We are doing homework right now w hopes to finish before 8.

Westdale is a middle school. Getting your kid into pre-K at an elementary magnet school does NOT guarantee you a spot in the magnet program. My advice is find a solid PreK with some type of learning prep and not just a babysitting daycare if possible. You may have to pay out the wazoo but it will help with your kids exam when prepping for elementary magnet.

Two different schools. Westdale Elem is on college, the middle school on Claycut. Elem is magnet, middle isn't to my knowledge. Kid would need to go to McKinley Magnet for middle. End game is acceptance to BRMHS.

True, and what you said in your previous post is true also--it has a magnet program (foreign language immersion academic magnet) as well as a traditional program. It also has a gifted and talented program.
But I think the OP is referring to Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School, which is an elementary school and one of the best magnet elementary schools in BR (also probably the hardest to get into).

Also true. Pre-K programs at magnet elementary schools do not ensure that your child will get a spot in the Kindergarten program at the same school. The exceptions are the Montessori magnet programs at Belfair & Dufrocq, which start at Pre-K3.

Sherwood Middle is also a feeder to BRMHS and Lee, but students in Westdale Middle's magnet program feed into BRMHS as well.

I'm talking about the one on college. It has no immersion. I know about westdale middle. My wife worked there

I can confirm that Westdale parents are hipsters. I see them every day picking up their kids like they own the damn neighborhood.

Yes, I know. I was trying to add to the above poster's comments who was talking about the middle school.
As I said earlier Westdale Heights Elementary (on College) has a very good program and I think they are usually have the top performing elementary in BR based on test scores. (BR FLAIM has been catching up to them in recent years, but I think Westdale Heights is still tops.) Most of the kids that I know who went there later went to Sherwood Middle & then BRMHS.
From what I understand, it is usually the most difficult of the magnet elementary schools to get a spot in. Siblings of current students are going to get first dibs. Applications for all magnet programs are in the fall--usually magnet application period starts in October and ends in December for the following school year. Some magnet programs open a second round of applications in the spring if they have open spots; I don't think Westdale Heights usually does though.
Pre-K won't give you an automatic spot in Kindergarten, so you'd have to reapply for K during the regular magnet application period.

My oldest attends, but he didn’t start until first grade. It is a very good school and by the first & second grade the kids who can’t handle the work or have behavior issues get weeded out. Also, I believe all kids have to test magnet level prior to Kindergarten.
But I’ve never heard of any issues from parents that I know who had kids in PK-K.
It’s also easier to get a kid in prior to first grade because more spots open up.

Were you able to get your child in their pre-k program? I know they sent out acceptance letters a couple weeks ago.
