Were you surprised by how much of your paycheck goes to taxes when you just started out?

I'm sure the OT ballers with their immense empires found all the loopholes and us Swiss bank accounts like pros, but for us commonfolk did it ever shock you at the onset of your career when you started making real money?

No because 1) I went to school and know what an effective tax rate is and 2) because I'm not retarded

Like being dared to take a kick in the ball bag. Knew it was coming, but still hurt like a mofo.

It's shocking these types of things aren't taught in high school, at least they weren't when I grew up. Basics of getting paid, balancing your bank account, understanding debt (ie. tuition), etc

When I started 80% of my pay came in the form of day rate bonuses, which were taxed like I was making 800K or some shite

That was a bit of a surprise

Likely because you were in smart kids math. I took consumer math.

I remember working at chrysler and working 7 days, coming in 2 hours early, working 2 hours late, and getting 10% shift premium on top of that.

I literally gave uncle sam all of my OT money. I said F'that, and especially all the shite work i had to do, to get that OT.

I believe the vast majority of people that aren't fiscal conservatives are either poor so they are looking for a handout, so rich that taxes don't affect them, or just young and/or incredibly naive..

No, because I like living in a civilized society.

(Doesn't mean there aren't problems than need to be fixed).

As I've grown older I've realized that regressive tax structures like high sales tax and Alabama's esssentially flat rate income tax really screw working class people.

People with less income are paying a greater percentage of their income on sales tax, hence it's regressive nature. This is true of flat taxes as well.

A ten percent flat rate hurts more if it's 10 out of your 100 than it would if it were 100 out of 1000.
