Man, I forgot how painful it is there. It really felt like a circus. Waiting in long line to get a ticket number. Once I get to front of the line in this prison-looking inside of the building, the front desk person starts to get nasty with me because I brought an extra, backup document, just in case, so I didn't have to go home and start all over again.

You sit down in this packed waiting room and it just felt like chaos. Clueless college student comes in without proper documentation, gets sent away, and one of the front desk people starts complaining about him afterwards. Then he comes back and the other person at the front desk starts raising her voice with him, causing a scene.

Had to hear all about someone sitting by me's trip and pilates because she was face timing some friend or family member in the crowded waiting room. Had to wait forever as the tickets were slowwwlllly called out.

Finally get my number called and get to go to a counter and the person working the counter was nice, but it was extremely clear that anything other than their basic job description they just weren't going to do and other than processing what I needed done, I was on my own.

I genuinely can't remember my last experience at the DMV? Did I just pick the wrong one or is it like this everywhere? Is there a good time to go besides right when they open where some of this BS would have been avoided?

Lucky they started doing that because after covid, they'd turn you away if you hadn't made an appointment on their website.

They are all like that. I don't understand why it is always such a sketchy crowd.

It is like city court visitors + late night gas station crowd. I always feel like the only semi-normal person in the mix.

Ours isn't that bad if it's open, which it's not at least half the time.

It felt like every corner and type of person in America was in that waiting room. The overall wait was well over an hour, so it was interesting-enough t people watch the waiting room and just observe the crap show happening at the front desk.

The private OMVs that have popped up wverywhere are the way to go. I'll gladly drop an extra $20 bucks or whatever it is to not spend my whole morning at the state run OMV.

You had the patience to write, edit, and posty a brief but concise account of your time at the DMV. This was done without the aid of profanity or insulting anyone’s intelligence.

I’ll briefly reiterate that this was a personal business matter at the DMV.

Was this at Louisiana DMV?
Orleans Parish?

Didn't even think to do that, but if I need to go back in the future, Spent almost my entire morning there versus probably in and out in 15 or 20.

You're probably paying that extra 20 bucks to feel like a human as opposed to being herded around like cattle.

I’ve found DMV has vastly improved for routine stuff in the past few years. On the other hand, anything that is non-routine you have to pray that paying a fine can solve your problem.

Earlier in the year, I went to the DMV to renew my license and it was painless. I made an appointment though.

It put me in front of the line and the others had to wait.

My experience was not like this:

My fault I didn't make the appointment. Went to make it at the DMV and it was gonna be, for the ones convenient to me, mid-August before I could get in. Should have thought about it a month or two ago, but didn't realize making an appointment would be that hard.

Now I know!

The Texas DMV process is much simpler and faster than in Louisiana. I had to go in person because it had been 8 years, just a few weeks ago. However, I was in and out of the DMV is less than half an hour.

I thought Connecticut was a piece of cake, too, but it was just an out of state transfer. North Carolina still required you to pass a written test with a valid out of state license, which was very frustrating. However, the rest of it was forgettable.

Overall, I think Louisiana’s DMVs are especially bad.

I had to buy tags the a while ago because I waited too long to do it online. I was in and out. From the time I got my ticket/number to the time I walked back out the door was less than ten minutes. Location, location, location.

ETA: The only painful experience I've had with our DMV over the past several years was when I bought a vehicle from a dead person. Part of that was on me, though, but they could have been more helpful and clear on everything that was needed and it would have saved me one of the three trips.

I made an appointment at the one in Opelousas to get a nice license recently and was out the door in 10 minutes.

My experience at the one on airline in Nola is hell on earth.

Omg, exactly this. Most of the people there are nasty and look shady. If unable to complete a task online, it’s worth paying extra at a title place that handles the tasks to avoid the DMV.
