I understand that Old Richmond still has sway.

Does being on the Register protect them from removal?

There's more talk about removing statues on UVAs campus than removing any statues in Richmond.

No, being on the register is just a way to call attention to historic buildings/sites. There is no law against tearing down a building on the register. Some municipalities may have more stringent laws/ordinances against tearing down historic buildings but I'm not sure what Richmond's laws are.

National Registry is selective in its protection..depends who who it is. You know, kinda like discrimination and prejudism of the old Jim Crow only in reverse.

Richmond has 6 or 8 huge statues down a big boulevard, added Arthur Ashe to the end of it.

They even have one for the head of the Confederate Navy, whose name escapes me.

Matthew Fountaine Maury. Not the head of the confederate navy but an integral part.

Also of note, current US Navy vessel, USS Maury, is named after him.

Yeah, Richmond has Monument Avenue with several statues. I think a while back some of them had graffiti written on them.
