Yeah my roommate was barely making $30k, so you can see the temptation to make these accounts, since more money is based off of it
I admittedly haven't followed this story as much as I should have - were they opening fake accounts and funding them or just opening multiple accounts that were never funded?

Yeah, and they fired about 5000 low level employees for the fake selling. Those guys got squat.

Please tell me you are joking, and that you don't seriously only have one retirement account... please

From what I understand, they would open 10 accounts and put in 1000 instead of one account with $10,000 that the customer had provided to the bank

So to be fair and accurate... the 134 Million is the current value of his vested stock and vested retirement benefits he has earned through his career at the bank.
It's not a golden parachute... however... it does clearly signify what kind of compensation arrangements these big wigs have at these large companies.
As part of the resignation, he is losing additonal unvested shares.

Why do corporations have to pay him anything?
He should have been found in violation of his contract, nullifying any payments.
Plus, the employees that we try fired have filed a class action lawsuit. Should sue for whatever they are paying this CEO clown.

The money those CEO's make is really disgusting compared to rank and file workers.

Oh, and if you think this only is happening at Wells Fargo, you are sorely mistaken.
Every bank pushes its employees to this level.

CEO is like having the head coaching tag in CFB/NFL
you can continue to rake in money, while failing at ur job, business after business.
A favorite of mine, was when Supervalue bought Albertsons, Albertsons was failing under their CEO, yet after all the shite got settled, the failed CEO was put in charge of Supervalue. He was the sole reason Albertsons was in major debt(400mil) at time of purchase. Supervalue was forced to sell Albertsons, and ended up splitting their company into 2 divisions. Failed CEO, still failing and getting paid $$$$$
EDIT Said CEO retired in Feb 2016, probably forced, with a huge pay out.
