Friend,

Erythema may be the most overused and supercilious word in medicine, whose adherents claim to prefer brevity and conciseness in communication, both written and spoken. Why say the four syllable word when red is just one and has five fewer letters? Even worse is erythematous. There is no good reason except to continue the tradition of jargon.

If that is a recluse bite the only good thing I can say is at least its not in a area with a lot of fat. Their bites seem to decay fat like a flame to butter.

A decade ago I mistakenly swatted one on my forearm. Had a quarter size hole in my arm for 6 months. I could look in the hole and see my muscles working... creepy shite. To this day the scar is a 1/4" deep crater.

Got bit by a brown recluse about 10 yrs ago on my leg. Ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics and dilaudid for a week. The had to debride it daily and it left a scar, obviously.

The dilaudid part was fun, tho.

It's within days of the 1 year anniversary of my belly bite and there's only a small scar about the size of the distal end of a pinkie finger that's maybe 1/10th inch deep. All the pinkness is gone now too finally.

Like you said though it seems to just literally melt fat. Not a method to recommend but I do have visible loss of fatty midlife beltline ring. I'm a skinny guy so didn't have much there to begin with so gotta look closely to detect it. Slightly scalloped area about 3" horizontally and 2" vertically, maybe 1/4" deep at middle. Just hard to see since it's so smooth, kinda like instead of a hot knife, setting a spoon on a tub of soft serve butter.

The move of Mom from AR back to LA after Dad died was not fun with the seatbelt running across it. Spider was in one of the old boxes they stored and was disturbed when brought box upstairs to pack so it was a fresh bite the seatbelt ran across. Op is not gonna enjoy wearing pants for at least a month. (suggest not wearing favorites until healed, that thing is gonna weep for 2-3 weeks non-stop)

Friend was bitten on Hilton Head Island and was treated by local Dr. Finally went to Savannah Hospital and was diagnosed as septic. He died three days later. Don't underestimate...

Can we see a pic of it? Maybe something for the OP to look at.

Did they recommend any follow up? I see a decent amount of bites on the foot and leg and they can get pretty nasty. If you start to see any necrosis you need to follow up asap.

I have a patient who had a wound on his leg for 5 years following a brown recluse bite.
