I think it leave New Orleans every day around 1:00p and Memphis early in the morning, maybe 6 or 7. About a 9 hour trip.

Sounds like a terrible not very relaxing weekend.

Let's just be honest with the guy and tell him to put his arse on a plane

Point Clear, Alabama. Stay at the Marriot Grand Hotel. A little more than a 3 hour drive.

Houston, San Antonio Memphis, Pensacola, Starkville.

If he wants to get out of New Orleans for a weekend Memphis is probably not the best choice. Pensacola wouldn't be bad.

8 hours on a train is about the max I would do at one time. it isn't ideal.

If you both enjoy history, drive up to Vicksburg and tour the Vicksburg National Military Park, the U.S.S. Cairo Museum , The Old Courthouse, Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum etc. You can stay at a Bed & Breakfast like Anchuca or Baer House Inn. Lots of Bed & Breakfast places there.

Map the drive.

Natchez is an even easier drive if it's the time of the year to tour the antebellum homes there.
