No one means anything malicious with that comment. They think they are being helpful.
For the future....just don’t ask that of someone that is having trouble getting pregnant. Assume they have already discussed all the options and if adoption is one they want to pursue...they will tell you.
Adoption isn’t this super easy option. It’s expensive and can be an emotional roller coaster of its own. And it’s not guaranteed you actually end up with a child from it.
